I couldn’t put my finger on it.

Something was missing.

I thought I would be happy she was home where she belonged. Thrilled to have her back. Elated that she was back in my bed.

But I wasn’t.

Reaching for my doorknob, I stopped when I heard Montana’s voice. That was another thing. I knew that Largo and Montana had a tight relationship. They were in essence brother and sister in every way but blood, but since the punishment, he’d acted as if the last three years had never happened. That she just returned from some fucking vacation and it was time to catch up on all they missed. There was no hostility, no scorn, no anger on his part.

In some ways, it was like she never left.

Carefully cracking the door open, I saw Montana sitting next to my wife, holding her hand.

“I got you something.”

“You did?” She grinned as Montana reached into his cut before leaning over her, placing something around her neck. When he sat back down, I saw Largo looking at the diamond pendant necklace he once gave her on her birthday. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked up at him and whispered, “Thank you.”

“Never take it off again. Okay?”

“I promise.”

Standing there, seeing the two of them interact, I knew Bane was right. My brother loved my wife as if she were his blood sister. There was nothing she could do that would destroy that fact.

“You ever gonna forgive him?”

“Right after I beat his ass for eavesdropping.”

Rolling my eyes, I walked in, heading for my dresser. “You know this is my room, right? Don’t you have your own fucking wife to annoy?”

“She’s working a double shift at the hospital.”

“Who’s watching York?”

“Mrs. Alice.”

“So, you’ve decided to annoy my wife?”

Montana leaned back in the chair and grinned. “No, I came to visit with your wife. Annoying you is a plus.”

Largo snickered.

“Get out.”

Montana chuckled, getting to his feet. “Largo, as always, it was a pleasure. Mercy, don’t forget we have a board meeting later tonight.”

Nodding, I removed my wallet and keys from my pocket before placing them on top of my dresser. Taking off my cut, I placed it on the hook on the wall before sitting in a chair to remove my boots.

“You look tired.”

“Because I am.”

“How is Sophia?”

“She’s good. She misses you.”

“When are you bringing her by so I can see her?”

Sighing, I rubbed my hands down my face. “Not yet. Maybe when you’re healed and can walk without pain. I don’t want her seeing you like this. She’s been through enough already.”
