The truth was, he didn’t trust me, and after everything that’s happened, I wasn’t positive I could trust him, either.

I thought it was funny.

Caleb Davenport was the man I planned on living the rest of my life with. I needed him like the very air in my lungs. I thought no matter what life threw at us we could weather the storm so long as we were together.

Maybe he was right.

Maybe I should have stayed gone. He seemed happier without me. At least he wouldn’t have to see me every day if I was no longer there, and who knows, maybe in time he would find someone who would better suit him? Someone without a past, and someone who could be what he wanted.

I tried.

I really did.

But in the end, I had to be true to myself, and after what Cynic did, I was never going to be the woman I was before.

Reaching behind my neck, I unbuckled the clasp on the collar I wore and held it in my hands. Looking at it, I already knew what I was going to do before I even said the words. I knew the second he left me in his room after he took what he wanted from me in the club’s bar. Though it hurt to even think about it, in some way it was better than hearing him say the words.

He didn’t want me anymore.

“There is something you can do for me.”

“Anything, my dear.”

Handing Maxim the collar, I asked, “Would you please make sure Caleb gets this back? It belongs to him.”

Maxim frowned as he looked at the collar. “I think it’s best if you give that to your husband yourself, Mrs. Davenport. While I have no problem interfering in the personal lives of my friends when the mood suits me, that collar represents something more than a wedding ring and you know it.”

He was right.

I knew that.

Placing the collar in my lap, I whispered, “He doesn’t want me anymore, Max. He only put this around my neck to punish me. I’m tired of being punished for something I had no control over. I thought when I went home, he would understand and listen, but he didn’t. I don’t know what to do anymore and I’m tired of running and looking over my shoulder.”

“The thing about running, Largo, is eventually someone will catch up to you. Is that what you want? Do you want Mercy to catch you? Because if that’s the case, sweetheart, you don’t have to run far. That man loves you.”

“It’s complicated.”

Maxim chuckled. “Marriage is that, my dear. If it were easy, there wouldn’t be divorce.”

“Boss, it’s done and I was able to get hold of Montana. He wants Largo returned immediately.”

Looking at Maxim, I knew what he was going to say, so I didn’t even bother asking or pleading my case. I’d lived long enough in a world where I was someone’s property. The brand on my back sealed my fate all those years ago.

Resigned, I scooted over, saying nothing more.

What could I say?

Maxim Fedorov was an associate of the Soulless Sinners. A good friend to Montana. I knew Maxim wouldn’t ruin that friendship over a woman. It just wasn’t done.

No. I was going to have to find my own way out.

Maybe Silver was right.

Maybe if I explained everything to Montana, he would help me.
