“Good, because we have a fucking mystery to solve.”

Chapter Twenty-Five

Mercy

With the matter at hand being a club issue, Montana cleared the clubhouse. Only those on the board, along with the Retirement Rejects, Virginia Stone, and my woman remained. George Stone found himself in an uncomfortable position, seated at the end of the table, flanked by Malice and Payne, who were less than thrilled about being assigned to watch over the former president. As for the Rejects, they sat stoically, refusing to look at anyone. Virginia sat next to Montana while Largo took the seat next to me.

With her hand gripping my leg, I tried to ease her apprehension as best I could.

“Now—”

“Son,” Virginia interrupted Montana before he could really speak. “I need to say something before you begin.”

“Alright, Mom. Go ahead.”

Virginia Stone sat up and looked directly at my wife. “Largo, whatever is said here tonight, I want you to know that you are not to blame. You are just an innocent in all this. You’ve always had my support, and you will still have it when this meeting ends. You are one of my girls. And you will always be.”

Largo sniffed, wiping away a tear. “Thank you, Virginia.”

“Anyone else?” Montana asked to the deathly silent room. “Alright, then, let’s start at the beginning. Talk, Dad.”

“Got nothing to say, Son.”

“The fuck you don’t. You either spill the beans now or you will spend the night in the mailroom.”

“Don’t threaten me, Son.”

“You think I’m fucking around?” Montana roared, slamming his hands down on the table and standing to his full height. “I’m the motherfucking president of this club. What I say goes. Now you will fucking speak or I will have Malice drag your ass kicking and screaming down to the mailroom.”

George Stone slowly stood, then turned to Malice. “Let’s go, my boy.”

Before anyone could utter another word, George Stone walked out of the boardroom with Malice behind him. The second the door closed, Montana rounded on the Rejects. “What the hell was that?”

“He’s a proud man, Montana. You know that,” Popeye stated.

“Fuck pride. We’ve got DNA evidence that says he’s Largo’s father. How is that possible? You three fucknuts never leave his side. Are you telling me that the test is wrong?”

“No,” Happy whispered, shaking his head. “I’m not saying that.”

“Then what are you saying?” Virginia fumed, glaring at the three men.

“We can’t tell you,” Snoopy eventually said. “We can’t tell any of you.”

“That’s where you’re wrong, Snoop.” I smirked, leaning back in my chair, my eyes focused directly on Happy. I heard the words he just spoke. As the club’s current chaplain and only active board member of the Rejects, Happy was required by club law to follow the current president, and he knew it. While Happy was loyal to George Stone, his loyalty first belonged to Montana. “Prez, I think we can cut Popeye and Snoopy loose. They won’t say shit.”

“Get the fuck out of here. The both of you.”

Both men left the room and all eyes shifted to Happy.

“Talk,” I ordered.

“God, this is a clusterfuck,” the big happy man frowned, shaking his head as he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his thighs. “I told him shit always found a way. Fucker never listens to anyone.”

“Happy,” Montana growled. “Get to the fucking point.”

Happy looked at Virginia and whispered, “I’m so sorry, Ginny.”

Virginia took a deep breath, steeling herself. She asked the one question we all wanted to know, “He fucked her, didn’t he?”
