He stands back.

“Here.” Jack reaches in his pocket. “We’ve got six hours until Rippers are due to move the shipment. Means once you’re auctioned,” the words make me feel sick, “they’re likely to move you for transport straight away.”

“How long does the Rohypnol last?”

Jack attaches a small device to the front of Legs’ shirt near one of the buttons. “Twelve hours,” Jack tells him. “Once you’ve had it you’ll be out like a light.”

Legs slowly looks up. “Then it’s over to you.”

Fucking hell.“What is that?” I ask.

Jack finishes what he’s doing. “Nano tracker. Has GPS. It’s linked to my phone. It will send what you see back to me. If anything should go wrong—” Jack cuts himself off.

“You’ll know where to find me,” Legs says for him instead.

“That isn’t going to happen.”

A silence descends, making my skin itch. No way I’m letting anything happen to this kid or any of the people we’re going to see on screen. No fucking way.

Legs turns, scratching a hand through his hair. After a few steps he looks back to us. “If Jay doesn’t come back, you will look after Lauren, won’t you? I promised him I’d look after her.”

Suppressing the urge to growl at his insinuation that he isn’t coming back, I nod, unable to communicate any actual fucking words.

He smiles half-heartedly, then he’s gone.

“He’s a strong kid,” Jack says.

“No. He’s just a kid. Trying to patch into this fucking club. I want him on screen right now.”

Jack nods and pulls out his phone, bringing up Legs. If Icould have dropped him off, I would. If we could be camping out at the airfield, we would. Instead like morons, we have to let this play out to avoid raising any suspicion. We can’t risk Costa taking off. We can’t risk those people being killed for their silence. We have to let it run its course. Play our part. I hate it. Hate every fucking second of it.

As planned, we’re soon sat around the table, various laptops and phones open. The atmosphere is heavy with tension. Travis fills my glass, but there’s no more after this. We need clear heads, clarity for when we need to leave.

“He there yet?” Mop asks as he walks in, looking between us.

“He’s there,” Jack replies tapping on his screen.

We watched Legs make his way to the airfield, seeing no signs of being rumbled when he walked in. He was met by Costa’s men, patted down, then ushered into a makeshift room on his own. It tears my insides apart seeing his vulnerability. The only good thing at this point is that the GPS tracker hasn’t been found.

Blowing out my cheeks, I rub my eyes, seeing my phone dash across the table.

Mads: I’m so sorry it’s taken me this long to reply, been crazy here. I think Bex’s entire family is coming tomorrow. I miss you. Hope you’re still breathing x

Me: On my final breath. You’re not leaving me again. I don’t like it

I have no right to say that to her. But it’s the truth.

Mads: Same to you. Promise me x

Me: You have my word x

Mads: Love you, VP x

I smile to myself, my heart picking up pace at her words and her fierceness.

Me: Love you, my fucking sunshine. Always

Before I put my phone away, Lauren messages letting me know she’s checked on Lynn. I thank her and say goodnight, dropping my phone back on the table.
