Page 29 of Come Back To Me

Flicking my smoke to the dirt floor, I step on it, twisting my foot. I grab my tool of choice and walk towards him.

He doesn’t protest this time, but his arms wriggle, and the beam above him creaks as he writhes.

“Open wide.” Grabbing his jaw, I force his mouth open and ram the contraption past his lips.

He struggles against me, but eventually I manage to pinch his tongue in between the clamps. “Shit, you made that harder than I thought,” I say smirking, blowing out a breath after our minor wrestle. “Now, you’ve been asked a question.” I don’t like the idea of being tested, but this needs to be done.

He mumbles something inaudible.

I look at Travis still sat in his chair. “You get any of that?”

Travis shakes his head. “Afraid I don’t speak cunt.”

I look back at the man whose tongue I have stretched out of his mouth. “He doesn’t speak cunt,” I say mockingly.

The man mumbles again, and because I suspect Vincent’s somewhere watching my every move, I decide to show him how much of a threat I can be.

Just as I’m about to slice off the man’s tongue, I’m interrupted by my phone. Reaching into my pocket with my other hand, I grab it seeing the name on the screen.

“Vivian,” Mads answers.

I smile. “I still prefer Daddy.”

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to call you.”

I look at the man who’s now drooling, his saliva dripping, mixing with his blood on his chest. “Don’t apologise, babe,” I say, realising my girl just saved him his tongue.

“Okay. Hi,” she replies.

“You, okay?” I quickly flick a look to the butcher who shrugs his shoulders wondering what the fuck I’m doing.

“I’m fine, just on lunch. How’s your day?”

“Um, yeah, normal day at the office...” My eyes scan thescene before me. I realise Mads’ version of anormalday at the office couldn’t be any further away from what I’m doing right now.

My pause has the man in front of me fighting against the ropes. He moans as they undoubtedly cut into his wrists.

I tighten the clamp.

“Dean?” Mads asks.

Can she tell what I’m doing? “Yeah, babe?”

“You sure you’re, okay?”

I am now, I think to myself. “Never better,” I say, before lying to the one person I should never lie to. She knows my life’s far from fucking rainbows and unicorns, but I won’t add to her stress by letting her know what’s really going on. “Listen, I have to price up a job this afternoon, then we have church later on, not sure how long it will take. You okay to sort food and I’ll call on my way home?”

Mads pauses this time. She’s not stupid. She knows something isn’t right. “Is this how it’s going to be now? Me, your little housewife, having your dinner on the table ready for when you get home?”

My eyes widen a little surprised. I’ve all but forgotten about the prick in front of me when she mentions being my wife. “I don’t know, will it? I’m still waiting for you to say yes.”

She sighs. “Yeah well, either way, don’t get used to it.”

I then chuckle. Maybe she’s coming round to the idea?

Just as I go to say bye, her phone beeps with an incoming call. “Look, I have to go, call me later,” she quickly says, before hanging up on me.

I huff, surprised she ended the call so quickly, but given the circumstances, I let it slide. “Where was I?” I say out loud.
