“Yes,” he breathes.

I’ll take that.

Slowly, I unlock the door, opening it a fraction.

Dean waits, then when I step back, he enters the room, eyes soft and on me. I purse my lips to stop myself from crying as he closes the door behind him.

“Why do you have a solicitor here?” I burst out.

Dean lets out a slight laugh, his hands stroking up and down the sides of my arms. “Shh, not so quick with the questions,” he tells me. “You don’t want to waste them.”

“That is my first question. Why do you have a solicitor here?”

“Technically that’s now your second—”

“—Dean.”

His face drops but he doesn’t take his hands off my arms. “She’s an old friend.”

“Why’s she here?”

Dean takes my hand in his, then walks me back to the bed. He sits on the edge then pulls me onto his lap, placing his handaround my protruding bump. Lowering his mouth, he kisses my tummy, then he looks to me. “She’s here because I asked her to help me with something.”

“Help with what? Are you in trouble?”

He shakes his head then runs his hand over his beard. “I don’t know. That’s why Mollie’s here. To help, in case I am.”

With one arm around his shoulder, the other cups his face. My thumb strokes the short layer of hairs on his chin. “What’ve you done?”

Dean sighs. “It’s more about whatneedsto be done.”

Looking into his eyes, I wonder what he means. Is he talking about a retaliation? But for what? The threat they received? “What is it you think you need to do?” I ask him.

Dean smiles, and I return a confused look to him, my eyes scrunching together. “I’m sorry, you’re all out of questions.”

“Don’t do that.”

“What? Technically I gave you a freebie,” he says being smart.

“You’re infuriating.”

“Don’t blame me. It’s not my fault you wasted them.”

I move to stand off his lap, but his arms hold me in place. “Nope, you’re staying right here,” he says.

“Dean, I need to go home. I need to try and wrap my head around why you’re being like this.”

“What youneed, is to trust that I’m doing everything I can to protect the things I love.”

“Protect us from what?” My voice is harsh as I snap my question at him. “Just because I’m a woman and you’re an outlaw, doesn’t mean I need you to always protect me.”

He’s silent. Staring at me. “You’re not just any woman though, Mads, are you? You’re mine.”

I frown at him as he continues.

“Things are changing, and I need to know that when thetime comes, you won’t fight me or argue the toss about what’s happening, you’ll just trust me and do as I say.”

Slowly, my eyes move to look at him. “Do as yousay?” I ask, checking I heard him correctly. “When have I ever just done as yousay?”
