“Cut it out!” Mop shouts, his hands frantically trying to prise Travis off Dean. “We don’t have time for this shit, they’re coming!”

Both of them stop fighting instantaneously.

Talia lets go of Travis, and her feet hit the floor with a thump. “Who’s coming?” she asks.

Before anyone can answer, the place is swarming withpolice. They cover every entry, shouting instructions at us all. One officer places his hand tightly on my arm, then loosens it immediately. He’s not here for me. “Need you to move,” he says, proceeding to drag me out of the way of the main crowd.

Talia steps closer to me.

The officers point their tasers at Dean and Travis, holding them still where they stand. Both their chests are sucking in heavy breaths.

“On the ground,” they’re instructed.

Both of them bend their knees, placing their hands behind their heads.

Two officers move to Dean. They scoop him up, bringing him to his feet.

“What’s happening?” I ask, my voice anxious when I notice them not doing the same to Travis. Only Dean is handcuffed, his pockets searched and his rights read. “Dean?”

My eyes move desperately, looking at anyone who will explain what’s happening.

When he looks at me, the man who walked out of that room with me only minutes ago, steps back into the shadows. The way his eyes blacken, it breaks my heart in two.

This is what he knew was coming. This is what he said would happen. This is what he was scared of. What did he do? I don’t want him to leave. He can’t leave me.

My feet are moving before I even register what I’m doing.

“Hey!” the officer who was holding me shouts as I move away from him with speed.

I make it to Dean just before the officer puts his hands back on me. “Please come back to me.” The sob that escapes my mouth is enough to make Dean sigh. “Please, you come back to me—to us.”

I can’t control the tears as they pour from my eyes.

“You listen to Travis whilst I’m gone.” Dean looks at the manhe was fighting.

My eyes follow his, delayed.

Travis stands and wipes his bloodied chin, but he nods, an understanding between them still in place.

“Whatever he says, Mads, you listen.”

“But—”

“We’re all out of time, babe.”

“No, please…”

The officers start taking Dean away from me. They manhandle him past Travis towards the door.

“No!” I move to reach for him, just to hold or to touch him before he’s taken away from us.

Travis moves into my path, his strong arm effortlessly stopping my advance.

“Get off me, Travis! Let me go!” My arms hit at his as I cry.

Dean looks back, taking one last look at me. My legs give way when our eyes lock, forcing Travis to have to catch me.

“Come back.” My sobs are muffled as Travis wraps his arms around me tighter, one hand holding my head close to his chest, sheltering me.
