“He knew you were his sister?”

I nod. “He knew. It’s the reason I needed to get away from the clubhouse. I wanted to tell Puma to kick Max out of the club. As a patched member, I’d have the right. Puma would have done it, even if he didn’t agree with my request. Max is just a prospect.”

“Do you still want him gone?”

I shrug. “I don’t know,” I finally admit.

“Look, I’ve never had a brother or sister, so I don’t know what you’re feeling. But I had a daughter. She meant the world to me, but I lost her. Men that I trusted took her away from me. I’ve spent the past few years looking for her. Your brother found you. Maybe you could give him a chance to explain why he kept his identity a secret?”

CHAPTER EIGHT: RAFE

Back at my desk, I check the search results and discover that Angela Turner is working as a cocktail server for one of the smaller casinos in town. Picking up the phone, I call Puma.

“You read the report?” he asks in way of a greeting.

“I did.”

“Now, do you understand why Viper didn’t call the cops to report the incident tonight?”

I sigh because I can’t argue with him. Fuck all. “Look, I get it, but vigilante justice isn’t the answer.”

“It can be,” Puma argues. “Did you track down what happened to them?”

“I didn’t. You want me to?” I ask, shocked that he suggested it.

“Wouldn’t have suggested it if I didn’t think it was a good idea,” Puma says. “Look at where they are, including the asshole D.A. who refused to press charges, then call me back.”

“Wait. I know the D.A. He got busted for embezzlement. He lost his job and his wife. Hell, I think he’s still in prison. You did that?”

“I made sure Viper had her justice,” Puma says.

“Well, fuck me,” I mutter, which has Puma barking out a laugh.

“No, thanks. Alisa’s the only one I’ll fuck these days. I’ll leave Viper to handle your sorry ass.”

I snort at his response, but before he ends the call, I give him something. “Found Angelica’s mom, Angela Turner. She serves cocktails at the Horseshoe. I’m going over there to talk to her about Angelica.”

“She’s here in Vegas? Is she still with Turner?” Puma asks.

“I don’t know. I have some hard questions for her. She may be as guilty as him.”

“If you want us to intimidate her into signing over her rights, let me know,” Puma offers.

I cringe at his suggestion, but not just because it’s illegal. Part of me wants to take him up on it. “I’ll let you know what I learn. Any word from Viper?”

“Nothing new. She’s fine. Give her tonight to calm down. Today was rough on her.”

I end the call knowing Puma’s right. As much as I wish I was the person she turned to, I know Viper is used to handling her shit. She hasn’t told me much about her life prior to the Demon Dawgs. But after hearing Max’s story, I know she’s been on her own since she was fifteen. Living on the streets makes a person self-reliant.

Before heading over to the Horseshoe, I do as Puma suggested and look into the five men who accosted Viper. George Striker, William Newsome, Mark Peters, David Holbrook, and Gary Mitchell.

I read George Striker’s record first. He’s currently serving his second year of a ten-year sentence at Nevada State. The FBI caught George in a sting operation. Soliciting sex with a minor. Although George’s arrest came a few days after the sting. An anonymous informant provided evidence of his guilt.

Next is Mark Peters. The LVMPD arrested him during a takedown of a local narcotics ring. They caught him inside a meth lab. An anonymous tip led them to the lab, and Mark was the unlucky buyer caught inside. He’s now serving a seven-year sentence along with his good buddy, Striker.

David Holbrook is another who found himself with a hefty prison term after an anonymous caller provided details on his unethical behavior. Holbrook was an investment manager with a major gambling problem. He’d been skimming money off his clients to support his habit. He’s serving a fifteen-year sentence in Warm Springs Correctional.

Gary Mitchell was the only one of the five to have a previous record. He served five years for extortion fifteen years ago. He’s currently in jail for possession of a kilo of cocaine. I’m unsurprised to find an anonymous tip played a part in his arrest. I’m sensing a pattern.
