Long moments of only the fan above them, the occasional creak of the bed from adjusting and the turning of pages to fill the silence passed.

Maybelle peered up catching Trey staring at her from the corner of her eye. When she finally looked directly at him, he ripped his attention away. So, she started to steal glances only looking away when he turned to her.

Soon the quick stolen glances turned into longing stares. She’d look at him over her book, and he’d peer back.

“What?” She asked in a sultry tone.

“Nothing.” Trey shrugged and they both went back to their tasks.

But only minutes later Trey peeked over at her, and she met his green stare.

“What?” He asked softly.

“Nothing.” Maybelle shrugged.

Both of them smiled as they returned to their homework and book. They continued like this for a while longer until…

“Oh— oh no.” Maybelle stared at her journal, concern marring her features.

Trey stood up from the bed walking to his dresser picking up his water bottle to take a swig from it, “What’s wrong?”

Maybelle looked up at him, jaw falling open, “Why were you ever friends with me? I was so boring.”

“I didn’t think you were boring.” Trey took another long gulp of his water, the effort making his shirt hike up his sculpted torso.

“Trust me, I was boring.”

“How so?”

“I’m a virgin.” Maybelle explained dully and Trey choked on his water sending him into a coughing fit.

“Excuse me?” He offered through chopped up coughs.

“No, I’m sorry. Not only am I a virgin but I didn’t get my first kiss until that night you and I hung out when I was living at home with Chelsea! I have only been kissed like—twice. Apparently, I had promised a certain future husband that I would try my best to save myself for him because and I quote, only you deserve to know me entirely.” Maybelle scoffed, “I mean, I’ll admit that is pretty precious of little old me but jeez, takes some serious self-restraint to limit the kissing too.”

Trey had gone eerily silent.

Maybelle looked up to see Trey watching her, brows knitted together, the force of his emerald stare had excitement fluttering in her lower belly, her palms once again damp with nerves.

Trey turned his back on her as he returned his water bottle to the dresser with a clunk, “Hold on a second, Mayhem. You mean to tell me you didn’t sleep with Williams?”

Maybelle smiled;it can be taught.

“Isn’t it incredible how much time, headache and confusion can be saved when you don’t assume and just listen to what your friends have to say?” She drawled letting the journal shut as she collected her things, “Not that I quite blame you. I am not so innocent myself, but it didn’t take me a whole three weeks to let you explain yourself.” She shot because, why not. She was feeling pretty entitled to land every blow possible in the moment.

“My work here is done. Stop ignoring Williams, he misses you. I’ll see you tomorrow morning for our walk.” Maybelle slumped off the bed, Trey’s back was still to her as she reached for the door.

“What about Sam?”

The question caught her off guard, Maybelle hadn’t talked about or to Sam since the night of the banquet and hadn’t particularly missed him either. She honestly had forgotten about the poor kid and the fact that she had actually been kissed more than a couple times if she included their kisses from the party and the game.

No. those kisses wouldn’t count because those interactions held no significance in Maybelle’s heart when compared to the way Trey looked at her let alone touched or kissed her.

Maybelle turned to find Trey piercing her with a look that made her knees nearly buckle.

“What about him?” She asked faintly. The hot tension between them made her bones feel hollow and chest feel light.

Trey stepped forward, “What was he to you?”
