I felt so stupid at first, of course a girl as pretty as you didn’t want anything to do with Lego Lovin’ Tory, but then I quickly caught on that you clearly just stayed the hell away from anything that had a pulse. I tried a few more times to get your attention, tried to talk to you.

I even read that Flipped book I constantly saw you reading at the house when I was over, I was ready to even buy and plant a tree in your front yard, like that Bryce character did if it meant you would notice me. But I gave up and decidedto just admire and obsess over you from afar.

I tried to move on, date, party and forget but there was no forgetting you Maybelle. There was no getting you out of my head, my heart.

Love,

Trey

Maybelle was sniveling as she continued to read. There were excerpts on the day he met Larson and Bear, the day he told them about her. He wrote about dates with his mom and days when he was feeling especially lonely as he watched her sleep.

Dear Maybelle,

I wanted to tell you about the time Liam, and I were almost arrested…

Dear Maybelle,

Today is my birthday, I wish you and Liam were here.

Dear Maybelle,

I can’t wait for you to wake up and meet my mom, I told her all about that morning in your kitchen. She said your taste in music is fantastic…

Dear Maybelle,

Can you please wake up?

Dear Maybelle,

Coach made me a starter today. I wish you and Liam were here to celebrate with me.

Dear Maybelle,

One day, when you’re awake and realize you’re head over heels for me and we move in together, do you think we could get a dog?

Dear Maybelle,

I miss you.

Dear Maybelle,

It was a good day. My old friend Noah Williams from Harbor High signed to play for UCLA today. He’s going to be my roommate. Feels like I have a bit of Liam here with me after all.

Dear Maybelle,

It’s been six months now, Mayhem. Wake up. Please.

The whole book was full of entry upon entry of Trey relaying his good and bad days. His highs and his lows. Maybelle could not get enough. She absorbed everything. Every word, every new fact, every dream, and written idea. Then a certain page stood out above the rest.

Dear Maybelle,

I read the entry about what happened to you today. I’m speechless because I had no idea you carried so much weight. I’m speechless because you amaze me. I want to hold you; make you feel safe and never forgotten or mishandled but for now all I can do is write. Speak to an empty book of pages praying that you will one day read.

I empathize with your experience, May. My dad walked out on us when I was thirteen years old. He didn’t even say goodbye. He just left. I haven’t heard from him since. He didn’t even fight for me when my mom and I requested for my name change so I could go by her maiden name, Turner.

My mom had been a wreck and I quickly learned to be the man of the house, her caretaker. She continued to go to work, thankfully, but I learned how to pick up the rest of the slack. I also asked her out on mother, son dates so she wouldn’t feel so alone. So, she would forget that he had left but rememberI was still here.

My mom is truly an amazing woman, and I am constantly in awe of her, but those first few years were painfully lonely. I had become quiet, anxious, closed in on myself. My mom was too busy fighting her own demons to notice my silent battles. Football was one of those things getting me through every day. Making me feel alive.
