Doctor Brown’s head bobbed slowly.

“That’s not entirely unfortunate.” He said softly giving her a sad smile.

Whatever the hell that means.

Doctor Brown rose from his chair, “I need to speak to a very upset and overprotective, young man. I will be back shortly. In the meantime, Betsy will take care of you.” He swiftly left the room while Betsy replaced him in the seat next to her.

“You may have been through hell and back, baby, but you are damn lucky.”

Maybelle shot the lovely woman a curious look silently askingwhat about any of this was lucky. Betsy gave her a full smirk, answering her silent inquiries.

“Because you got that boy out there who would do just about damn near anything for you, meaning, you’re not alone.”

11 His Mayhem

Two security guards stood between him and his girl. One short, and pudgy while the other was tall and skinny…

How much more cliché can you get?

Trey chuckled to himself knowing that he could take them easily and walk right through their tasers if it meant getting to her.

“I don't understand why you all are being so goddamned difficult. I have sat in that room almost every day for the last year, I should be with her when she wakes up.” Trey announced, frustrated, to the floor of hospital staff, the security guards and the gathering onlookers who came to gape at the drama unfolding.

When he got the call from his mom saying Maybelle was waking up at around three in the morning he had leapt from his bed, brushed his teeth then sprinted out the door to his Jeep. He managed to throw a black workout shirt on but was out front, crawling into his car in only his boxers with his gym shorts in hand that he slipped on over his hips while at a stop light on the way there.

HisMaybelle Mason was waking up.

The short fatty officer began to approach him, Trey was itching to wipe the floor with the man but before anything could really happen his mom was a force between them both. Chelsea Turner glared daggers into her son, but he didn’t care.

He had to get to his girl.

“Honey, I need you to calm down and take a seat.” His mom said sternly.

Trey couldn't contain the eye roll, “Mom, you called me. If she is awake, Ineedto be in there.”

Chelsea nodded understandingly, “I called because I know how much you care about her, but I also thought you could hold onto a thread of your common sense through this process. There are some things you need to know before you can see her.”

Chelsea grabbed his hand and stared pleadingly which was a look Trey couldn’t ignore.

Nerves began to roil his insides.

“Doctor Brown is with her right now; he will be out here in the next few minutes to update us on everything.” Chelsea explained further while Trey sighed and dropped himself into a waiting chair along the wall, only a few feet from where Maybelle’s room was.

His Maybelle, awake. She was awake.

The two security guards finally stalked away when they decided Trey was no longer a “threat” …assholes.

Chelsea joined her son in the seat next to him.

“Did you talk to her?” Trey asked uncertainty marring his tone. He was nervous, scared for why they wouldn’t let him just see her. Chelsea slowly nodded staring blankly at the floor.Trey knew what he wanted, or needed to ask but he dreaded what the answer could be.

“Was— was she, could she...?”Fortunately for him, Chelsea quickly caught on to what he was choking out, so she finished his thought with the answer.

“She is fully aware, functioning really well.”

Trey let out a deep breath that he had been holding onto, relief flooding the pressure away in his chest. His mom put a comforting hand on his back, “Didn’t you need to get back toschool today for football training? You have a long drive ahead of you.”

He shook his head, “I talked to coach, he was understanding of the situation. He said I could have the rest of the week off.”
