She couldn’t help it, she groaned, “That feels so good.” Maybelle had closed her eyes and rested back into her pillows. Trey continued on, making the aches and her taut limbs mold to his magic hands relieving so much of the tension.

“I should go, let you get some sleep.”

Maybelle’s eyes shot open, and she latched to his arm before he could stand from the bed, “I’m not sleeping, please don’t leave just yet.”

Stupid, she felt so stupid for her begging, but she was too scared to care about how pathetic she might look to him right now.

Trey’s brows furrowed as he lightly held the hand, she had grabbed to him with, “What’s wrong?”

She couldn’t meet his eyes, she focused on the floor, “I’m just— I don’t want to sleep just yet.” She said as her eyes grewheavier. Trey didn’t reply right away, studying her as she kept her attention to the floor.

“May, it’s ok to sleep. We all need it. And from what you said at dinner it sounds like you’ve been awake for almost forty hours straight. You really need to sleep.”

His thumb brushed back and forth across her knuckles as he spoke softly. Maybelle couldn’t argue with him, she knew he was right by the way she struggled to hold her eyes open and would yawn every two seconds.

“If you want,” Trey continued, “I could stay with you, sleep on the floor and make sure you’re ok.”

She finally looked up at him, meeting his soft gaze. Maybelle nodded, “I would like that, and could you wake me up when you wake up? No matter how early, please.”

She refused to sleep away anymore of her days, especially the few days she got with him.

Trey squeezed her hand, “Of course, I promise.”

So, they set him up with a blanket and a few of the extra pillows from her bed on the plush pink rug next to her. Just like they spent the last year with Trey by her side, making sure she didn’t feel alone even as she slept.

Having him there, knowing she wasn’t by herself and the assurance that she would wake up with the start of the day like everyone else, Maybelle swiftly drifted away finally receiving a full night's rest, well earned.

19 Check Mate

Darkness, trapped, suffocated, exiled.

No way out, no way out, no way out.

No soft light to expunge the blackness.

No distant noises to follow out.

Her body, her mind was everywhere and nowhere all at once. Stuck, she was stuck, she will never get out, never walk, never live. She would cease existing in the dark, alone and forgotten.

A never ending, tormenting, painful hell of sleep—

But there it was, a whisper, soft call of her name, a nudge, a pull. An emerald gaze called to her, lulled her into reality as she blinked to see light. Morning sun reached through her window setting her small bedroom in bright iridescent new light. Making those messy caramel waves and green eyes glow as he knelt against the bed up next to her and brushed the sleep crazed curls from her face.

“Good morning, Mayhem.”

His voice was deep and raspy from sleep. It was morning, and Trey had followed through with his promise.

Maybelle blinked the world around her into focus. The bright sunrise was stunning, especially as it bounced off his gorgeous features. Maybelle’s attention fell down his torso, he was shirtless.

Where did his shirt go— actually, she didn’t quite care.

How does one look so incredibly beautifully messy and perfectly disheveled after a long night of sleep?

Maybelle reached toward him and placed a hand against his cheek, “You my friend, are so hot, it hurts.”

Trey’s head rocked back as he guffawed.

“Excuse me?” He chopped out through his chuckles.
