Trey and Chelsea planned to go out for their mother, son date as soon as he was ready so Maybelle was looking for her roommate Madelyn, who said she would give Maybelle a ride home after the game.

Trey and Williams left the women for the showers while Maybelle glanced at the edge of the stands, scanning the faces for Madelyn, missing the man in front of her until she was stumbling into his awaiting arms. Frazzled, Maybelle hurriedly glimpsed up to see Sam smiling at her sweetly.

Fortunately for her, he wasn’t sweaty like the other guys, due to the fact he sat sidelines the whole game, but Maybelle was not complaining.

“You came.” Sam beamed down at her, his arms around her hugging tight. Maybelle hated the fact that Larson’s voice was immediately in her head spitting off a string of inappropriate jokes using that one line. She really had been spending way too much time with him.

“Oh, uhm, yeah, had to support my team.” She awkwardly stated.

Maybelle realized her arms were still awkwardly stiff by her sides, so she quickly brought her arms up around his waist. Sam pulled her even closer, encouraged by her reciprocation of his affectionate touch.

“It means the world to see you here, Maybelle.” He said so dreamily Maybelle was surprised he didn’t break out into song like a damned Disney movie prince.

“What can I say, I love sports.”

Wow, awkwardness must be contagious because she was catching whatever this poor boy had.

She was stilted, tongue-tied and desperate to leave.

Maybelle peered behind Sam seeing Chelsea of all people watching— and visibly cringing.

Good golly, this was humiliating.

Maybelle tried to put distance between them by prying his hands from her waist but was caught completely off guard as Sam’s lips landed on hers.

Maybelle stilled completely.

Wishing she had wings, wings that could fly her up, up, up into the flames of the sun burning this whole encounter off her skin. Chelsea, bless her soul, cleared her throat making Sam startle and break the kiss.

“Hi, you must be Sam, I’m Chelsea.” Her lilting voice sang as she held her hand out to him.

Thank the lord for Chelsea freaking Turner.

Sam released Maybelle demurely facing Chelsea and accepting her hand.

“Yes. You’re— aren’t you— it’s nice to meet you.” Sam stuttered but Chelsea only smiled kindly.

“It’s nice to meet you too.” She replied and Maybelle could see the gears turning in Chelsea’s head looking for an excuse for them to get out of the situation, but the oddest most bizarre thing came out of Sam’s mouth.

“You’re Trey’s mom, right? How do you know my girlfriend, Maybelle?” He asked and that one question had Maybelle shaking with tension.

Hiswhat?

She could hear Chelsea answering him, but she couldn’t focus on what Chelsea said. Maybe her amnesia recently got worse, so she didn’t remember the conversation where she agreed to be Sam’s girlfriend?

Nope, they had hung out only once earlier in the week to make sure all was well even after the drama of the party, but the girlfriend topic was never brought up. She would have remembered a conversation like that, and she wouldn’t have agreed— because she wasn’this.

Maybelle opened her mouth.

What she would have said she didn’t know, but Sam beat her to the punch, planting a kiss on her cheek.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, babe. Good to meet you Ms. Turner.” And he was gone, prancing off into the locker rooms.

Maybelle was stunned. Chelsea was stunned. They both just stared at one another slack jawed for a moment while the crowd moved around them.

Chelsea was the first to speak, stepping up next to Maybelle, “So, when were you going to tell me you were dating someone?” Chelsea’s tone wasn’t serious, her gentle voice edged on teasing, but Maybelle still felt like her heart was in her stomach.

“If I had known I was in a relationship, you would have been the first to know.” Maybelle grumbled dropping her face into her hands. Chelsea tittered and pulled Maybelle into her comforting embrace.
