“Do you still trust me?”

Drawing in a deep breath, I let it out and press my lips together. “I want to. But this has blindsided me, and I’m wondering why he dragged me into whatever the fuck this is. Is it because of Stanley? Were they working together? I have all these questions now.”

“I know, and I wish I had answers, but I don’t.”

“Then I guess I need to ask Stanley,” I blurt out and then jump a country mile when the door bursts open, and Alistair charges in like the devil is on his ass.

“Absolutely not. Besides. He was expelled and is facing prosecution.”

“And you know that how?” I ask, pretending he didn’t just eavesdrop on this conversation because I’m standing in the proverbial glass house with no stones to throw.

“I know everything.” His clear blue eyes pin mine, and I gulp as if I’ve been caught doing something wrong.

“Noted,” I growl, suddenly pissed off with all this. “You know what? You guys are fucking unbelievable.”I throw my hands in the air, feeling the anger bubble up. “If you knoweverything, then spill it, Alistair. Because right now, I’m in the fucking dark, and I hate it.”

Alistair looks between me and Alex, his expression hardening. “Ever, we don’t want you to be tangled up in this mess.”

“But I am tangled up in it!” My voice rises, the frustration at boiling point. “Because of him,” I gesture at Alex with a sharp jab of my finger, “and apparently his evil fucking twin.”

Alex steps forward, his face clouded with guilt. He looks like he wants to say something more, but the words seem to get lost.

Alistair shifts his weight from one foot to the other. “Look, I get it, but going to Stanley for answers isn’t happening.”

“You telling me what to do again, hmm?”

“In this instance, yes, because it seems you need someone to look out for you.”

“Ugh! You’re both maddening assholes. I need time to think,” I spit out, backing towards the door.

“Ever, wait,” Alex says quickly. “Text me if you need anything, okay? Even if it’s three in the morning. You know I’ve got your back.”

“Yeah, well, we’ll see.”

I shove the door open and scramble into the kitchen, where I’m greeted by Damien. He takes one look at me and asks, “Coffee?”

“You’re a godsend. Or an asshole. I’m not sure which this morning.”

“Asshole?” he asks with a raised eyebrow. “What did I do to deserve that title this early on?”

Snickering, I shake my head. “Nothing. I don’t know. I just found out about Alex’s so-called twin. It’s thrown me.”

“Yeah, it’s big.” He makes me a coffee and hands it to me.

Before I can stop myself, my gaze drops to his arm, and I see a fresh cut there, and it tears at me.

He sees me notice but doesn’t say anything, nor does he try to cover it.

“You can talk to me; if you want,” I murmur, blowing on my coffee to hide my face from him.

“What about?” he asks carefully.

“What it is that hurts you.”

He throws his head back with a deep inhale. “You don’t have time for that shit.”

“Says who?”

“Me.”
