Page 34 of His For the Summer

He snorted and opened his car door.“Get inside. We’re going to go hide in the hotel until further notice.”

Hiding in the hotel didn’t seem so bad once we got inside — it was incredible, clearly far more expensive than anywhere I’d ever stayed. The public spaces were a picture of understated luxury. It was somehow rustic but expensive-looking all the same. There was beautiful woodwork everywhere — thick slabs of live-edge wood, in rich tones of brown, intricate wood paneling, and massive wood doors.

As we entered the lobby, an intimidating-looking middle-aged Asian woman turned to us and she stepped forward to greet Aiden with a hug.Her smiled was wide as she turned to me and smiled.

“Is this him?”she asked.

Aiden smiled.“Hill, this is my boyfriend, Jay.Jay, this is my dad’s sister, Hillary. She’s one of the only people in my family who doesn’t suck.”I shot him a wide-eyed glance.I was surprised to hear him introduce me as his boyfriend to someone in his regular life, but he didn’t seem to notice my alarm as Hillary stepped back and gestured for us to follow her down a hall.

Even the elevator was luxurious, and I was almost afraid to touch anything, for fear that I might leave fingerprints. Our footsteps were silent on the plush carpet as she led us to the end of a hall and opened a door.

“The presidential suite,” Aiden said, chuckling.

“Only the best for my favorite nephew,” Hillary said.“Have fun, boys. Are we telling your parents you’re here, Aiden?”

Aiden shook his head.“This weekend is for us.They’re not in town, are they?”

“No, and I don’t expect them, thank god,” Hillary said, making Aiden laugh.

“Our relationship isn’t a secret,” he said.“I don’t want to deal with Dad being… Dad.”

“Noted,” Hillary said, nodding and backing out of the room.I tucked that exchange away to analyze later as I studied the massive room. The decor was a mixture of contemporary and rustic, with luxurious touches unlike any hotel room I’d ever been in.A big bowl of fresh flowers sat on the coffee table, another on the mantle of the massive fireplace, and one on the counter that sat along one wall. There was an incredibly comfortable-looking black leather sofa, and through a set of pocket doors, I could just barely see a huge four-poster bed.

“Why does it have a piano?”I asked, stepping forward and running my fingers over the keys of the glossy brown baby grand.

“Because it can,” Aiden said, shoving his hands in the pockets of his jeans and watching me as I wandered around, touching everything. The room was incredible — a beautiful and over-the-top two-room suite nestled into the corner of the building. One exterior wall held huge picture windows that overlooked the ski resort, which in summer was a beautiful patchwork of bright green grass and aspen and pine trees. On the other exterior wall, a big sliding door led out to a balcony.I peeked through the glass, grinning.

“Ooh, is that a hot tub?”I pushed the door open, sticking my head out to examine the balcony.

“Yep.And the privacy fence means we can snuggle naked while enjoying the massaging jets.”

“I vote for that.Now.”I went for the hem of my shirt, ready to get naked.

“But I ordered room service. And you haven’t even seen the bedroom,” Aiden said, grinning. He tugged me through a wide pocket door and into a large bedroom area. The bed was worthy of our attention. It was huge, with a dark wood four-poster frame covered in a cozy-looking assortment of pillows, and everything about it was soft and fluffy. After the camp beds, I wanted to dive right into it.

A knock on the door caught Aiden’s attention, and his face lit up.“I ordered all of my favorites from the kitchen. Most people have a family recipe that’s their comfort food, but my comfort food is room service.”

“I can’t decide if that’s sad or awesome,” I said, falling into step beside him as he walked back across the room.

He studied me for a moment, then shrugged.“A bit of both, I’m sure.”Then he yanked open the door and greeted the room service waiter by name, tipping him and taking the cart, which was laden with platters and ornate silver covers. There was also a bottle of wine, glasses, and a jar of what looked like lemonade.

“So you thought we’d stuff ourselves, then have sex?”I asked.

Aiden blinked, then burst out laughing.“You may have a point.Perhaps we’ll just sample a little of each dish, then some hot tub hijinks, then…” He swallowed and blinked toward the bed, his cheeks turning pink. Was Aiden nervous? He cleared his throat and continued, “um, we can save the rest for later.”

I smiled, slipping my hands around his waist and stepping closer, kissing him softly.“Thanks for making this special, sweetheart,” I said, holding eye contact, trying to get the calm, cool, collected Aiden back, but that Aiden had fled the building.

He let out a shaky breath and nodded, then reached for one of the platters.“We should start with the brownie fudge sundae. That gets gross if you ignore it — believe me, I’ve made that mistake.”Clearly, he wasn’t ready to talk about what was bothering him yet.

“That looks incredible,” I said, grabbing it and hauling it over to the little table in the corner by the window. He grabbed a few more things and joined me, his eyes darting out the window as we sat down.He poured us both some wine and took a very long sip of his.

“So, you have a house here in town, but you spent a lot of time in this hotel?”I took a bite of the brownie and silently thanked him for suggesting we eat it first. It was decadent, and I groaned and took another bite.

He watched me eat, smiling a little.“Sometimes, my parents didn’t really want me around.”

“What? That’s insane,” I whispered, climbing into his lap and offering him a bite of the brownie, then kissing him, tasting chocolate.“Who wouldn’t want you around?”

“Well, when you’re throwing big parties for the jet-setter crowd, it’s best not to have a six-year-old boy asking the adults questions about their fossil fuel consumption.I was obsessed.”
