“He was afraid to eat it,” Parker added.

“Okay, it was gross. There were guts and stuff!”Jay said.“How could I be certain you cleaned all that stuff off?”

I leaned over and kissed his cheek.“Still the same Jay,” I whispered, and he laughed. The last remnants of my jealousy faded away. This wasn’t him finding a better guy. This was some healthy separation.“I’m glad you had such a great time.”

“Of course, it wasn’t the same without you,” Jay admitted, reaching over to give my hand a squeeze.“I missed you like crazy, especially at night.”

“Same here,” I confessed, my heart swelling with affection for this beautiful man before me.It was true—we both managed fine apart, but there was something undeniably special about being together.

“Promise me we’ll go on our own adventure soon,” Jay whispered, his eyes locked onto mine.“Just the two of us.”

“Really? You won’t be done with adventures when camp ends?”

Jay grinned.“Maybe you’re rubbing off on me, after all.”He leaned against me, looking happy. As I watched Jay laugh with Parker and the others, I felt a warmth in my chest that could only be described as happiness.

After dinner, we all headed up to the bonfire for camp songs and socializing. The glow of the bonfire painted our faces in warm shades of orange and red as we all gathered around it, laughter and stories filling the night air.

Jay was still buzzing with energy from his adventure, and I couldn’t help but feel a surge of pride as I listened to him regale everyone with tales of his exploits. As the flames danced before us, I felt compelled to draw closer to him, to hold his hand, to make sure everyone knew he was mine.

“Hey,” I whispered into his ear, squeezing his hand.Jay turned toward me, his eyes shimmering with happiness and excitement.

“Hey yourself,” he replied softly, a playful grin tugging at the corner of his lips.

“Can I say,” I murmured, wrapping my arms around him and pulling him close, “that I’m really proud of you?You did great out there.”

Jay’s cheeks flushed a rosy pink at the compliment, and he leaned back against me, allowing himself to be enveloped by my embrace.“Thank you,” he said, his voice barely more than a breath.“It felt good to do it myself.”He glanced at Parker.“Okay, sort of myself.”

“Of course,” I reassured him, pressing a gentle kiss to the side of his neck.I sat on a big log bench on one side of the fire, tugging him toward me.“Now come here.”

Without hesitation, Jay slid onto my lap, his body fitting snugly against mine as if we were two puzzle pieces meant to be joined together. He sighed happily, nuzzling into my chest.“Your smell,” he whispered.

“Do I need a shower?”

“No.I missed the way you smell. The way I feel surrounded by your heat. Also, Parker snores.Did he snore last session?”

“It’s only when he’s in a tent,” I said.“He says the backpacking pillow doesn’t provide enough support.”

“It’s so damn loud.We didn’t have to worry about bears. He scared them all away. How was your time without me?”

“I was lonely for you,” I said.“But Ben gave me this book that you have to read. It’s sexy and exciting, and there are swords and magic. And two guys falling in love.”I snapped my mouth shut, wondering if I’d given myself away, but he snuggled closer, wrapping his arms around my waist.

“Sounds nice,” he murmured sleepily.

We sat like that for what felt like an eternity, our hearts beating in perfect harmony as the fire crackled and popped around us.For a little while, he was so quiet that I wasn’t sure he was awake, but it didn’t matter.Touching him was enough.

The evening bells rang, and campers grumbled and started gathering around their counselors, ready to head down to bed.

“Hey guys,” Parker called out, his voice tinged with amusement.“You want to stay?Ben and I can take the campers back to the cabin. You two can catch up before Ben and Aiden have to leave on their backpacking trip tomorrow.”

“Yes, please,” I said, grinning.

“Don’t stay out here all night, okay?”Ben said.“I need Aiden fit and strong for tomorrow’s hike.”

“Thanks, Ben,” Jay replied with a sheepish smile, wrapping his arms around my neck as the others began to make their way back toward the cabin.

I leaned down and finally kissed him, losing myself in his taste.

“Fuck, I missed you,” Jay whined, pulling back.“And as soon as I get back, you guys have to leave on your backpacking trip.”
