I returned from brushing my teeth and dove under the fluffy covers. Her body was blazing like a furnace, and she warmed my heart as well as my body as I spooned her from behind.

“What time is it?” she murmured blearily.

“Who cares?” I placed soft kisses on the nape of her neck, waiting for the gasp this never failed to elicit from her. “You don’t have anywhere to be.”

“Work, maybe?”

“Forget work.” I grazed my hand over the tops of her breasts. I hadn’t convinced her to sleep naked yet, but she was in the thinnest cotton tank top, which was almost as good. “Stay a while.”

She let out a hum of happiness and arched her back to press her breasts into my hands. Her nipples hardened under my palms, and I slipped my fingers beneath the fabric.

“Is that a yes?” I let my hand delve lower, down the elastic waistband of her pajama shorts.

As my fingers found wetness, she shuddered and let out a moan. Her butt wriggled right up against me, and she tossed her head back toward my face. “I need to check the time.”

“Are you serious?” I rubbed her slowly, sucking her neck gently with a hint of teeth. “This will only take a minute.”

“With you, it’s never a minute.” She had me there. “I have to be responsible.”

Who would’ve thought my fun, flighty girl would be so worried about getting to work on time? “Fine.” Reluctantly, I extricated my hand and reached for my phone. “It’s nine a.m.”

“Oh my God, I gotta go.” She jumped up and started putting on her clothes.

I lay back and tried not to pout. “You really can’t be five minutes late?”

“Baby.” She stopped what she was doing and pressed a kiss to my forehead. “I’m not that kind of person. You know I want to stay here with you, but this is my work that we’re talking about.” She swallowed, and her eyes filled with lust. “Believe me, later on, we’ll pick up where we left off.”

That would have to do. “Let’s not let this happen again.”

“You mean I should set an alarm? I’m on it.” She whipped out her phone.

“That, and you should leave a toothbrush and some clothes over here so you don’t have to run home first thing in the morning.” I gazed at her steadily. “Maybe a towel and some shampoo, and whatever make-up you use, too.”

“You’re going to have me half-moved in here.” She laughed as she fastened her bra. “Once I move into my new place, you better leave half your stuff over there.”

“I will. Promise.” I yawned. “Are we looking at more places tonight?”

“Actually, I think I decided to take the one we both really liked.”

“The high-rise apartment?” It was a gorgeous fourteenth-floor unit, almost like a condo but with a few less amenities. “Wasn’t it just a tiny bit out of your price range?”

“Yeah, but I think it will be worth it.” She wiggled her way into her pants. “I can cut back on my expenses. Drink less alcohol, or something.”

I sat up straight. “Who are you, and what have you done with Chelsea?”

Since she was confident that she could afford the place, she signed the lease right away. Although it was available to be occupied immediately, she decided to wait until after the holidays.

Christmas and New Year’s flew by. My friends couldn’t visit again, so I ended up taking the bus back to Boston. I missed Chelsea intensely. A tiny part of me worried she’d forget about me while I was away, but she was on the phone with me every day, keeping me up to date with every detail of her time off. This was her last holiday season living at home, and she made sure to spend every possible minute with her family.

“Do you think it’d be wrong to go see my friends tonight?” she asked over the phone. “I don’t want to neglect them, either.”

I folded my legs on Nia’s bed. “Of course it’s not wrong. Your parents can spare you for a few hours.”

“But soon they’ll be sparing me permanently.”

Her worry was adorable. She cared so much about the people in her life. “Baby, you’re moving across town, not to another planet.”

“I know, I know.” She sounded unconvinced.
