“Thank you for your time, Kevin.” Victoria flashed him her winning smile. “We’ll be in touch shortly.”

They had landed several other investors during the evening, but Kevin was the biggest one, so Alexa and Victoria paid special attention to him.

They made their rounds, saying goodbye to everyone else who they had convinced to join their new venture.

Finally, they were free. Alexa didn’t really mind these fancy work functions, but she far preferred spending time with her wife.

“You ready to go home?”

“Not quite yet. I’ve got a surprise for you—if you’re not too tired, that is.”

Well, that sounded intriguing. “I’m not too tired.”

Victoria pressed a kiss to Alexa’s cheek. “Excellent. I’ll drive.”

Alexa became more and more curious as Victoria took her out of the city limits to… a forest?

“Are we camping? We had better not be camping, Victoria; you know I can’t stand sleeping on the ground.”

“We’re not camping,” Victoria assured her. “Don’t worry, my love. This is going to be great.”

Her fears assuaged, Alexa reverted to excitement. She had no idea what Victoria had planned, but she believed her wife when she said it was going to be good.

They got to a small path that might have been treacherous to walk in the dark, except for the small, glowing pink and gold lanterns that were hung from tree branches every few feet.

“Did you do this?”

“Well, the lanterns didn’t exactly grow from trees, did they?” Victoria teased.

“I don’t know about that. They look like part of the scenery, like they belong here.”

“Unfortunately, they won’t belong here for much longer. I had to jump through several hoops to be allowed to hang them in the first place. They’ll have to come with us when we leave. I was thinking we could hang a few on the porch.”

“The oak in the garden would also look lovely decorated with these.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

They walked along the path, hand in hand, until they came to a small clearing, ringed with lanterns. In the middle was a large, puffy blanket with a picnic basket in the middle, along with a cooler bag.

Victoria held her hand out in invitation. “After you.”

Alexa grinned as she plopped down on the blanket. Victoria lifted the picnic basked to reveal another blanket, this one fluffier than the one they were sitting on. She sat close to Alexa and wrapped the blanket around both of their shoulders, effectively banishing the chill of the night.

She brought a bottle of champagne out of the cooler bag.

“To celebrate our successful deal?” Alexa guessed.

“I didn’t know we would be successful until after we were done tonight. No, this is for our anniversary.”

Alexa felt a flash of panic. “B-but it’s April third! Our anniversary is on May tenth!” Surely, she couldn’t have gotten the date wrong? She’d feel like a real piece of shit if she forgot their anniversary.

“Breathe, Alexa. You’re right. Our wedding anniversary isn’t for more than a month.”

“Then why are you giving me a heart attack?”

“It’s the anniversary of the day you got down on one knee and asked me to marry you.” Victoria gave her a soft smile. “That was one of the best days of my life. I wanted to celebrate it somehow.”

“Oh.”Alexa understood now. “You’re right—that does deserve some celebration. What do we have to go with our champagne?”
