“Were you guys scheduled to return today?” I asked as I leaned against my hand, looking at him. It felt like I hadn’t seen him in such a long time.

“Yeah, I sent you a text, but you didn’t respond,” he said as he pointed to my phone that was faced down on the desk and I winced. “But then I remembered from our call that you said you would be working late today. Are you okay?”

I could hear how concerned he was from his tone and my heart leaped as I stared into his eyes, nodding as I sat up.

“Yeah, just tired. There’s a lot of work to do,” I whispered and he looked at my laptop, leaning forward as he read what was written on the slides.

“Do you need me to help you?” he asked and I raised my hands shaking my head.

“No, I think you did your fair share of work this week during training. You must be tired.”

Nate put his hand on mine and gently rubbed my wrist with his thumb, and the butterflies were flying a bit too close to my heart.

“Nah, I actually feel reenergized now that I have seen you.” He pressed his lips on my knuckles and my cheeks were too warm as I watched him.

I wasn’t too sure about our relationship, or if it was something that could be called a relationship, but I loved spending time with him and I loved the attention he would give me.It honestly feels like younger me’sdesires are finally being met.

“Still, I can’t let you help me do my work,” I said as I put my hand over his, enjoying how comfortable we were with each other.

“How about this? I help tick off things in your work list and that way it could feel like I am helping. Please?” He put his bottom lip out as he tilted his head to the side, begging in the most cutest way and I gave in way too easily.

Even though we didn’t really talk about anything exciting while he helped me with my work, it felt like time moved faster and I was able to get through the mountains of information I felt as if were dragging me down.

His charismatic company and the soothing music worked wonders and I enjoyed every second as we pushed through. Nate really was a piece I didn’t know I was missing in my life and it felt like I could count on him with anything.

He somehow always showed up when I needed him.

“Are you sure you should be driving?” I asked him as we walked hand in hand to his car, noting that this was the eighth time he had yawned ever since we finished work. “Isn’t it a bit too much for you because of practice and me?”

“Nothing is too much for me when it comes to you.” He smiled as he opened the door for me. “I should make sure my angel getshome safely.” He helped me buckle up, this time being successful in landing a kiss on my forehead.

A smile grew on my face as I watched him walk around to the driver’s side, stretching his arms out over his head before he entered the car. He rolled his neck and I finally noticed the dark rings under his eyes. I hadn’t noticed before when we were in my office because of the dimmed lights, but he looked exhausted.

Maybe that was why he wasn’t saying much when we were in my office, he kept his sentences short and would lightly chuckle at times.

How did I not notice before?

The car ride was short and quiet, Nate barely said anything too, just a few comments about how the other people were driving and I lightly laughed along with him.

Maybe him always being there for me when I needed him wasn’t good if this was how he would be taking care of himself.

The car pulled up in front of my apartment building, and I unbuckled my belt as I opened my door.

“I’ll pick you up tomorrow morning,” he said and I shook my head.

“No, plea?—“

“I insist. How else would you get to work if it’s not with me?” He smiled and I bit my lip as I felt my heart sink into my stomach.

“Nate, you don’t have to concern yourself with how I get to work or go back home. It isn’t your responsibility, so please stop.” I kept my voice stern even though I felt like I was shooting myselfin the leg because I had a huge opportunity here but I was being too selfish when it came to Nate.

“Angel, it really isn’t a big de?—“

I interrupted him as I raised my hand, silencing him.

“Thank you for the lift. Make it home safe. Good night, Nate.”

I got out of the car and quickly walked into my apartment building, choosing not to entertain Nate like I would have because it was taking a toll on him. He didn’t have to do all the things he was doing for me, he had no right just as I had no right to use him.
