“You are not my sibling.” I raised my middle finger at him and he chuckled as he slapped my back gently. “Oh fuck you.”

“Nate is actually a good teacher, look at you standing alone right now,” Brian said and I rolled my eyes as I looked at Nate.

“I’m literally leaning against the railing, dumbass,” I groaned. Why was skating so torturous? It felt like my joints were on fire.

“Yes, but leaning straight. Your knees aren’t on the ground are they, smartass?” He skated away and I looked at Nate who was really quiet.

“You let me fall,” I muttered and he looked at the ice before he looked into my eyes and nodded.

“I’m sorry.” He leaned back and ended up on the ice, shocking everyone around us. “Does that make us even?” he asked as he got up with ease and stood close to me. I squinted my eyes before I burst out laughing.

“You’re an idiot!” I laughed as I covered my face with my hands, shaking my head. That was cute.

“Look, you’re standing by yourself,” he said as he brought my hands down and my laughter died down as I noticed I was a bit further away from the railing. “It wasn’t so scary, was it?”

“No,” I answered honestly as a big smile grew on my face. “Let’s do it again!”

Maybe trying new things wasn’t as terrifying as I thought.

Chapter 19

Avery

The venue was filled with vibrant music and there were a few staff moving around as we completed the preparations for Brian’s 27th birthday. The company had decided to host a birthday celebration for the captain of the Lumberjacks to celebrate him and obviously for promotional reasons as well.

With the amount of influence he had in Maple Creek, not only on women because he was adaddy—his words not mine—and men and everyone overall, it was a great opportunity to throw a party where we could promote most of our partnered brands and get people involved.

And yes, that meant that I was here to work, not to enjoy the party like everyone else was. I had already arrived hours prior to the party to make sure that everyone had been prepared accordingly and that everything would move smoothly throughout the night.

This wasn’t particularly part of my job description. However, I had to make sure that whatever was in the venue would make it to content, not only on our social pages but the guests as well. When you get people talking, you receive exposure, and who didn’t like a big fat check?

A few journalists that we had handpicked had arrived and had already set up a few of their items. We had also organized entertainment for part one of the party and obviously part two which was the adult party where all the kids who had mingled with their heroeswould have to bye-bye and go home.

I wish I was part of the kids, ugh.

“Don’t you need to go get changed?” my mother asked as she magically appeared near me, I looked down at my watch, ignoring just how much she had just scared me. “You don’t mean to attend the party in those overly huge clothes, do you?”

“Of course not, Mom,” I sighed when I realized that the venue was about to open. “You look beautiful.”

I kissed her cheek and she smiled.

“I know.” She shrugged and I rolled my eyes. “When you get to my age you will realize that you don’t have to thank everyone for everything they say, just what they do.”

“So are you going to thank me for throwing this birthday party for your baby boy?” I teased and she shook her head.

“Absolutely not. He’s a grown man and you’re doing it for a check.”

“You are so mean,” I said as I fixed the plants by the door, making sure that no one would trip over them. “Where’s Nathaniel?” I asked as I looked around, noticing that she was alone.

“He said he wants to make an entrance with his uncle,” she said before a cynical smile grew on her face. “Brian had to drop his date.”

“Do you not like her?” I asked, amused by her reaction.

“Do I like anyone?” she threw back and I giggled as I shook my head. “Besides your father, of course, but he’s outside smoking a vape before he comes in. Ugh.” She rolled her eyes.

She hated that my father smoked. He started off with cigarettes, graduated to cigars, and eventually picked up the habit of vaping.I don’t really have anything to say about that because I am still his daughter and I want to stay that way.

“Alright, Mom. Let me go change.” I kissed her cheek again before running up to the elevator and clicking on my office floor number. I leaned against the cold metal shaft doors and sighed, I was already exhausted and I couldn’t wait to get home and submerge myself in hot water.
