“Nate was exactly like that when growing up, and then he started getting pretty and became annoying like he is now. He’s such a loud ball full of energy,” she sighed and right on cue, Nate shouted from the kitchen.

“Nana! Where are the spices?”

She rolled her eyes as she pressed her head against the top of the couch and looked at Niel.

“Niel, my baby. Can you please go tell Nate that they’re in the top cabinet?” She spoke softly and he nodded as he got up and ran to the kitchen, disappearing around the corner which Nate had.

If anything, Niel loved being sent around, it gave him a sense of responsibility. He came back quickly, with a smile on his face as he adjusted his jacket looking at Nana.

“Nana, he found them,” he said excitedly and she nodded giving him a thumbs up.

“Do you want to go help him cook so that he doesn’t burn our food?” she asked and he nodded, quickly running back into the kitchen. She looked back at me with a smile on her face as she pointed behind her.

“They’re gonna be the same when he grows up. I hope you’re ready for the noise.”

“Niel isn’t a noisy kid,” I said as I giggled and she chuckled.

“That’s what I thought of Nate when I took him in. He looked so innocent and sweet, but he’s quite the opposite. Doesn’t he talk too much?” she asked and I muffled my laugh as I nodded. It was true, Nate did talk a lot.

“Luckily he isn’t one of those annoying people who talk crap. He’s laid back and sometimes lazy. Do you have any idea how many times I tried to burn that outdoor couch of his?”

“Ah! He loves it so much, he sits there even when it’s snowing,” I told her and she clicked her tongue before she burst out into laughter.

“He’s as lazy as his grandfather but also ambitious. I don’t know how he does it all.” She shook her head and I giggled. It was nice talking to Nana, she confirmed everything about Nate I thought I was crazy for noticing.

“He really is unique,” I said and she sighed as she looked at the ceiling before her brown eyes met mine and she raised her eyebrow as she inspected me.

“So when are you expecting?” she asked and I tilted my head to the side.

“Expecting what?” I asked confused and she pouted before she giggled and she rubbed her head.

“Silly old me, I suddenly don’t remember what I was asking you, my dear,” she laughed and I pursed my lips shocked.Would I also be like that when I’m older?

“You must really like my grandson. Does he treat you and Niel right?” she asked and I could see the concern in her eyes.

“He really is the best. I’m blessed to have him in our lives,” I answered confidently and she looked proud as she spread her arms out. “He’s good to us.”

“That makes me feel at ease,” she whispered with a faraway look in her eyes. “I’m happy.”

“Nana! Avery! The food is ready!” Nate shouted and she groaned as she looked up at the ceiling.

“Next time, send Niel and stop shouting so much!” she yelled back and I stifled my laugh. There really was nothing different between them. One of the same.

“Sorry!”

“Let’s go eat, my dear. I’ll tell you all of his embarrassing childhood moments,” she cackled as she got up and I laughed as we walked together to the kitchen.

Coming here was a great idea, I didn’t feel as pressured as I was before. I also felt glad that Nate grew up in a home full of love.

It was nice to forget about our problems for once.

Chapter 27

Avery

The table was eerily quiet as we all dished up our food. Our parents looked between us and I could see the questions in their gaze. However, they both said nothing. Brian sat opposite me, staring down at his plate as he played around with the food. Niel copied his uncle hoping to lift his spirits beside me. However, Brian only slightly smiled before he went back to his dampened mood.

This time, Mom had cooked meat.
