I continued to hold my steak knife. “I think you’ll get what you deserve, Vladimir. One way or the other.”

“Oh, and what is that, young Nikolai?”

At that moment, the butler, who had been standing attentively in the corner of the room, barfed loudly and disgustingly before falling to the ground. Upon seeing him do so, the four or five guards in the room did the same, gasping in pain suddenly as the poisoned water began to ravage their insides.

Vladimir’s face became white with utter shock. He continued looking around at all of his staff convulsing. As he did so, I noticed Svetlana crawling through a window in the back corner of the room, where she was hidden by a Christmas tree that was still up, even weeks after the holiday. There was a sick guard on the ground, but he was too ill to even notice her coming in.

“YOU!” Vladimir yelled, pointing at me from across the table. “You did this somehow!”

“How could I do this, Vladimir? Am I a wizard? A pandemic? You should really check what you’re feeding your staff,” I replied, cooly, waiting for Svetlana to be set with two feet on the marble ground.

Vladimir pulled out a black pistol and aimed it my way. “I’m going to fucking kill you, just like I did your parents, you weak piece of shit!”

At that moment, I saw Svetlana fully inside, aiming her gun at Vladimir, ready to fire and hit the pistol out of my cousin’s hand. Just as she began to pull the trigger, the guard on the ground pulled at her ankle and she tripped, missing Vladimir when she fired and hitting the bottle of vodka seated on the table’s center, causing it to explode into a million pieces. Vladimir, now aware of Svetlana, turned his pistol to face her. As he did so, I dug the poison out of my underwear and quickly dabbed its content’s along the knife’s edge. I ran towards him as quickly as I could, but he shot at Svetlana before I reached him.

I heard Svetlana scream in pain, falling to the ground. But before Vladimir could turn back towards me, I pounced on him, knocking the gun out of his hand. It bounced a few times against the marble floor, skipping like a stone across smooth water. I held the knife up high in the air and looked at Vladimir’s blue eyes as he looked back at me with terror.

Without a thought, I plunged the knife deep into his chest, supposedly right where his heart was. His eyes nearly popped out of their sockets, he was in so much immediate pain. And then, to my disbelief, a smile formed across his face.

“Nikolai….” he said, his voice weak and blood trickling out of his mouth. “So you are…stronger…than your parents were…after all…”

His eyes began to soften as the poison took its course.

“I am strong because of my parents, motherfucker.”

“I’ll…see you…in hell…cousin,” he uttered before his head turned to the side and hit the marble floor. He was dead.

I heard Svetlana yelp in the corner and ran over to her. Vladimir’s blood was coating my forearms.

“Don’t worry,” Svetlana said, holding onto her ankle. “The idiot got me right above my foot. What a horrible shot.”

I saw then that her ankle was bleeding. The guard next to her was still writhing in pain.

“Stupid…bitch…” he said, under his breath, his eyes fully closed.

“Listen,” Svetlana said, grabbing my arm. “Check on Damien downstairs. He should be up here and ready to go by now.”

“Okay, wait here,” I told her. “I’ll be right back. Don’t move.” “Take this,” she said, handing me her gun.

I ran out of the dining room and back towards the front entrance, where Mr. Ivanov had shown me on a map that we would find a staircase leading down to the basement, where they were keeping Grandpa. As I ran down the steps, I heard voices yelling. I slowed my pace to be silent, hiding myself behind the solid wall banister.

“You stupid, goddamn faggot,” I heard a woman say. “You really thought you’d be able to come in here and ruin all of this for us?”

“Big, strong lady man. Is that what you are?” a man’s voice followed.

I peered over the ledge and saw Damien tied up in a rope and seated on a wooden chair.

The man and the woman yelling at him looked like him.

They were his parents.

Behind them was a metal door, where Mr. Ivanov had said they were keeping Grandpa. “Go fetch Vladimir, let him know what’s happening,” the woman said.

“Oh, let’s just kill the idiot ourselves,” Damien’s father quipped back. Why weren’t they sick? Perhaps they too were too obnoxious to drink the tap water. Whatever the reason, they were still healthy and on their feet, and Damien was in trouble.”

“Fuckhead, I said go tell Damien that they’re trying to infiltrate the space so he knows that little Nikolai fucker is up to something! I’ll take care ofDamienahere.”

I heard the man start to walk my way, and when he appeared at the bottom of the staircase and saw me, I had Svetlana’s gun aimed at him. I shot him in both of his feet, causing him to scream and fall to the ground in pain. He still managed to pull out a gun, but I shot it straight out of his hand.
