“I won’t let him hurt you. I promise. Nothing matters more to me than your safety.” I got to my feet and towered above her. “Enough talking. Lemme give you a little birthday experience. Coffee or orange juice?”

“I like what I’m hearing. Coffee, please. What do you have in mind?”

“Drink your coffee and have a peek at these, and I’ll be right back.”

“What is it?”

“Just look.” I gave her the bag and dropped a quick kiss onto her lips, then left.

“A bag of cards?”

“Yes,” I replied, going into the bathroom. I turned on the shower to make it nice and steamy, then stripped down to my boxers.

“A birthday card for every year you missed?”

“It’s cheesy, right?” I felt ridiculous for buying her a card each year when I didn’t have to. It had been a hard habit to break, after I’d been doing it since I was five years old. Selecting the perfect card for her had been something I enjoyed, and she had loved each one I’d given her over the years.

“Oh my gosh, Cade.” Hearing the emotion in her voice pleased me. “I can’t believe you bought all these to make up for the years we weren’t together.”

I returned to the bedroom but stopped in the doorway.

“This is so sweet. I love it.”

“I didn’t buy them all at once. I’ve been collecting them.”

Her mouth slowly opened, and she teared up. “You bought me a card every year even though we weren’t together?”

“Yes. Are you ready for the next part?” I jerked my chin toward the bathroom to redirect her. I didn’t want her to get weepy on her birthday and rehash her regrets. What was done was done. It was in the past and we were looking toward the future.

“I’m very intrigued.” She perked up and put the cards aside. “Is that the shower?”

“Yep. We haven’t showered together yet.”

“No, we haven’t.” She bit her bottom lip, teasingly.

“Thought it might be a great way to start the day.”

“You thought right.” She put her mug down and reached her hand out to me.

I took her by the hand and led her into the bathroom and undressed her. “You’re so beautiful and sexy.” The bite marks on her body had faded, so there was no evidence of that bastard’s abuse. But it was the emotional trauma that would take longer to heal.

“Ever considered getting a tattoo?” I ogled her naked body while I removed my boxers.

“You want me inked up like you?” She caressed my chest and pecked soft kisses on me.

“I wouldn’t be opposed to it. Maybe not as much as me. I like your unmarred skin. But something to show you’re mine would be fucking hot.”

“What kind of tattoo would you want me to get?” Her brown eyes smoldered at my body, then her hand slid down and gripped my iron cock.

I inhaled deeply. “What about two interlocked horseshoes to represent us?”

“I love it. Let’s do it. We’ll get matching ones. I mean, if you want to. You have plenty of skin available on your chest.” Most of his ink was on his arms and back.

I lifted her chin and kissed her. “Will get it on our napes.” I ran my finger over the spot I imagined the tat to go.

“Then I’ll wear my hair in a messy bun so the world can see it.”

“And I’ll be able to see it when I fuck you from behind.” I guided her into the shower and closed the door. Being close to her naked body made me ache to be inside her.
