“Why?”

“Because they’re precious and will give us eggs.”

“We get our eggs from your folks.”

I sighed, exasperated with my hubby. “Cade, I want my own baby chicks.”

“Okay, okay. Don’t go shooting me scary looks. I’ll pick some up in town tomorrow.”

“Thank you!” I beamed up at him. “We can give eggs to Graves. He’s got two boys with hollow legs.” Especially, the youngest.

After Martina moved her things to Burntwood, she took a part-time position at the elementary school teaching art, andGraves’s son, Hudson, was one of her students. She had a soft spot for the boy and hisbig daddy, as she referred to Graves. Nothing had happened between them, to Martina’s disappointment.

“I missed seeing you with the babies. You’re going to be an amazing mama to our baby.”

“Thank you. You’re the sweetest man ever. So what’re you up to? I’m sure you didn’t come here just to see me with the peeps.”

“I missed you.” His gaze was fixed on me, but I sensed something was up.

“Cade, I can tell when you’re bothered by something.”

“I need to talk to you.” He opened the gate and helped me off the ground.

“Oh, gosh. It must be bad.”

“Depends on how you look at it.” He closed the gate and led me to a couple of bales of hay to sit on. I didn’t notice Hollywood or Boone guarding their spots.

“Where’d Hollywood and Boone go?”

“I sent them on a break.” He took my hand and laced our fingers together. “Storm called me a bit ago.”

“Jake came out of hiding.” I squeezed his hand tightly. “Don’t sugarcoat it, Cade. Do we need to go on the run? What about my parents, and Olivia and Holden?”

“Take a breath, baby. No need to freak out.”

“Why not?”

“Because Jake is dead.”

“What? How?”

“Grizzly is looking into the details, but the DNA matches Jake’s.”

My vision blurred from the instant tears. “So it’s over? We can get back to living our lives the way we want?”

“Is that why you’re crying? Not because you’re sad about Jake’s death?”

“I’d wish no one dead, but he’s evil. I’m just relieved I don’t have to live in fear anymore and cart around bodyguards.”

Cade reeled me into his embrace. “Me too, Honeybee. I’m glad it’s over too.”

“I guess I can start making wedding plans and set a date.”

“You sure can.” He kissed my forehead and put his hand on my belly. “No more stressing, okay?”

“You don’t have to tell me twice. I am so over praying Jake wouldn’t find me.”

“Looks like it worked, though.”
