“Baby, I didn’t see any.” I grabbed a washcloth and ran cold water on it. I didn’t have any idea what I was doing. Just going with my gut, I guessed.

“I’m sore.”

“That’s expected.” I returned to my room and found her legs bent and knees together. “I got you a wet washcloth.”

“For what?”

I placed it against her pussy. “For here. How does that feel?”

“Good, actually.” She exhaled a breath. “Thank you.”

My heart swelled ten times larger. I loved this girl so much, I could hardly breathe. “Hold it here, Honeybee. I’m going to go clean myself up and then come back and cuddle with you.”

“That sounds perfect.” She smiled appreciatively.

Seconds later, I held Shelby against me and rolled onto my back. I kissed her forehead, memorizing her sweet, contented sighs as I rubbed her back.

“We did it,” she whispered, as if she was admitting to doing something naughty and someone might hear her. “And in the end, I liked it.”

“You were incredible. We finished strong.” I gave her a little squeeze.

“I love you, Cade. You’re the only guy I will ever love, and that’s a promise. My heart will always belong to you.”

Jesus, the way she said it, I believed her.

Shelby

Special moments in my life were hung on the wall leading upstairs. Collages of me and my siblings to chronicle our lives. My mom wasthatmom. We couldn’t do anything without her shouting,Say cheese!

Department store pictures of my family. Snapshots from holidays, when I’d been a Girl Scout and in 4-H. Me and Cade dressed up for Halloween, school dances, and the rodeo… I’d forgotten about them, so when I saw Jake stop to check them out, my stomach flip-flopped.

Most people hadn’t seen the wall my mom obsessed over unless they’d gone upstairs. When I was a teenager, I used to complain about my baby pictures and dorky shots my parents had captured.Candid photos, they’d call them. My friends would giggle and search for me among the dozens of framed and canvas prints. The only person who hadn’t poked fun at my toothless grins or jacked up bangs after I’d cut them had been my best friend in the entire world, Cade.

I entered my bedroom and was hit with a massive punch of nostalgia. My mom hadn’t changed a thing, which shouldn’t surprise me. She’d told me my room would stay as it was until I was a married woman.

My pine canopy bed was the focal point in my girlie room. The walls were covered in yellow and white daisies my mom andI had sponge painted when I got my big girl’s bed. Daisies had been my favorite flowers then and now.

Oh, my heart. Being gone for two years had been much too long.

I swept my gaze over to the sheer curtains trimmed in lace and smiled at the window seat where I’d spend hours reading and searching for Cade with my binoculars. I couldn’t see up to his house, but he’d ride his horse to the edge of the property by the road and would wave before heading inside for the night. Back in those days, neither of us had gotten a cell phone until we’d turned eighteen because our parents had hated technology.

On the bed, my beloved teddy bear and babydoll were right where I’d left them the last time I’d been home, resting against large fluffy pillows. I almost squealed and ran across the room to scoop them into my arms and squeeze them tightly. But I refrained from making a fool of myself. What thirty-three-year-old woman would do such a silly and juvenile thing? Not me.

“Thank you for showing Jake to my room, Dad. We’ll be down shortly.”

“No problem at all.” He shot me a wink as he left.

I closed the door behind him and listened to his fading steps down the stairs. We had thin walls, and I didn’t want him to hear us talking.

Once it was safe, I turned around to face Jake. “How are you doing?” I studied him for any signs of distress.

“Okay, I guess. Your family seems nice enough.” His eyes traveled around the space. “So this is your bedroom, huh? Have you ever had a guy in here before?” His gaze stopped on me, and I immediately noticed his green depths were hot with desire.

“Yes,” I replied honestly.

“Oh, yeah? Who?”
