Why did he have to call me that? “I’m fabulous.”

“But are you happy?” He tilted his head and kept his back toward Jake, effectively shielding me from his view.

“Are you happy? Who’s the blonde? And old girlfriend, I’m sure.” I couldn’t help myself. I had to ask.

“Are you jealous?” He hiked a curious brow.

“Why would I be? I didn’t think you’d be celibate after me. Especially after joining a biker club. So who is she?”

“A good friend.”

“An old girlfriend, you mean.” Stupid tears burned behind my eyes as he stared at me. I had no right to be hurt, but my heart ached just the same as I pictured him with her. “I watched you with her. You’ve slept with her and don’t lie to me.”

“I have.”

His confession made me stop moving, and my vision blurred, those damn traitorous tears multiplied and made their escape. God, I was ridiculous for feeling betrayed, but then he might feel the same seeing me with Jake.

“I didn’t expect such a vehement reaction out of you.” His hand on my lower back pulled me closer to him, like he was afraid I’d run away. “The scary looking dude next to her is her husband. They have two sons. She’s here for moral support.”

“Why do you need moral support?” I couldn’t believe he opened up so easily to me. Cade never lied to me, so I didn’t doubt him now.

“Because the love of my life returned, and I didn’t think I could handle watching her with another man.”

“And you thought it was a good idea to bring your ex-girlfriend?”

“She’s my friend, nothing more.” Again, I believed him, but…

“A friend you had sex with.” Why was I acting like a jealous woman? He wasn’t mine anymore.

“If you have questions, ask them. I’ll tell you everything.”

“I don’t want to know anything. I should go back to Jake.”

“No.” He dipped his head lowered, putting his mouth near my ear. His sultry breath on my neck made me shudder. “Are you happy, Honeybee?”

“I don’t know.” The words left my lips of their own accord and instantly I regretted it. Because I knew what it would do to Cade.

“Tell me.” His grip on me grew more possessive and protective.

“I’m overwhelmed and my emotions are a mess, no thanks to you.”

“Keep talking.” He stared at my hand. “Where did these bruises come from?”

Oh, shit. “Why are you doing this to me? Why are you complicating my life after more than a decade?”

“Baby, I already told you. Because the love of my life returned.” The sincerity in his voice and his words reached into my soul, and it was like I was home. In one dance, he’d breathed life into my withered heart. If the whole town and Jake weren’t watching us, I’d pop up onto my toes and kiss that cowboy for all he was worth.

“You moved on, and so did I.”

“I never moved on,” he hissed through gritted teeth. He shook my hand in his. “Did he do this to you?”

“Of course not.” I teared up, hating myself for lying to him. Mercifully, the song ended, and I stepped back. “Thank you for the dance.”

He wouldn’t let go of my hand. “I know you, Shelby. I feel it. You still love me.”

“I’m not free right now.”

“Then what are you gonna do about it, baby?”
