“I don’t know, but I say we stop now.” He paused for a long second. “Tell me what you want?”

“I don’t know what I want.”

“Yes, you do.”

“I want to come home for Thanksgiving. Spend the evening with you talking and stuff.”

“And stuff? You know if I have you in my cabin, I won’t let you go until morning… If ever.”

Those were the words I desired to hear. “Promise?”

“You have my word. Does that mean you’re ending it with the billionaire? Because I’m telling you right now, baby. Once I have you in my possession, I will kill him or any other man whotouches you. I gave you up once and regretted it every day. I won’t do it again.”

“Always my protector. You’re so strong and controlled. Even when you sound possessive, I know you respect me and would never force anything on me.

Cade was silent, but I could hear his deep breathing.

“Are you there?”

“Yes. What do you mean by forcing anything on you? Has Jake hurt you?”

“No. He just gets angry or frustrated way more than you ever did. And he doesn’t know me like you do.”

“We’ve known each other our whole life. Of course, I know you inside and out.”

“I care about Jake.”

“I don’t want to hear this.”

“But I’m still in love with you.”

“Jesus, finally.”

“But it’s complicated, Cade. My job is in California.”

“We’ll figure it out.”

“We don’t even know if we mesh anymore. What if we’re thinking of the way we were, but that was twelve years ago? We’ve changed.”

“Are you trying to talk yourself out of giving us another chance?”

“No.”

“Come home or I’ll come out there. I need to see you, Shelby. We need to see each other.”

“I’ll try to come out before Thanksgiving, but I’m not promising anything. Jake has no clue I want to break up and move out of the beach house. Not that there’s much to move, other than my clothes.” Everything in Jake’s place was exactly the way it was when I first moved in. Nothing was mine other than the framed picture of my family on my nightstand.

“Trust me. A man knows when he’s about to be dumped.”

“Really?”

“Yup. I saw it coming miles aways.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t apologize, baby. Just come back to me. It’s all I ever wanted.”

“Jesus, Cade. You’re overwhelming me.” I curled onto my side and stared out at the blue water.
