His eyes welled up. “Nobody has ever made me feel the way you do. Don’t you see I need you?” He hung his head and tears fell on his lap.

A small piece of me hurt for him. He wasn’t in his right mind. He needed help, to see a therapist, maybe get some meds. I touched his hand. “You’ll be okay.”

He looked up with pain in his eyes. “I can’t live without you.”

Was he going to let me go? Please, God, yes!

Without thinking, I hugged him. I wasn’t heartless and felt compassion for him. He’d already lost his grandfather, whom he loved dearly. But with the right treatment, Jake would be okay.

Jake squeezed me so tightly I could hardly breathe. Something shifted in him. He grabbed my head between his hands and sealed his lips to mine. Panic exploded inside me, and I tried to pull away, but he wouldn’t release me.

“Please, Shelby. Don’t leave me,” he begged as he kissed my neck. “We’re so good together.”

“No, Jake. It’s over. I don’t want this. Please stop.” I shoved at his chest, not caring about his feelings anymore. How could I be so stupid to think he was seeing the error in his way?

“Let me love you, babe. Let me show you how good we are. How you like my touch.” He pushed me on the bed and was on me a split second later. He was going to have his way with me whether or not I wanted it.

I violently shook my head. “No, no. Don’t do this. Please stop!” I thrashed under him, trying to throw him off, but it was pointless against his weight and strength.

“Relax babe,” he whispered. “You’re so tense. I’ll make sure you get yours.”

The shock of what was happening broke me. I zoned out and drew into myself.

I felt nothing, completely numb.

Cade’s handsome face flashed behind my eyes. “Cade, please save me,” I cried.

“You fucking cunt!” Jake backhanded me, and I screamed in pain.

“Shelby! Oh my God, Shelby!” Martina’s alarmed voice yanked me back to the present. “You’re bleeding.”

I looked down at my lap and my palm was filled with blood.

“What happened?”

“I, I don’t know.” But I did know. While I was lost in the wicked memories of what happened to me, I tried to kill myself, but instead of cutting my wrist, I slashed my palm.

“We have to hurry.” She took off her scarf and wrapped it around my hand. “They’ll be here any second.”

“What? Jake is coming?” I was on the verge of hyperventilating.

“No, honey. Not Jake.”

Shouting came from outside my office and women screamed. Utter chaos broke out.

“Come on.” She tugged me out of my chair and to the door. “Don’t be afraid.”

“What’s going on?”

“You’re being rescued.” She put her arm around me and held my injured hand.

“I don’t understand.”

People ran past us as she led me toward the back exit. We turned the corner and bumped into a man wearing a scary skull Halloween masks and he was wielding an enormous gun.

I screamed and tried to run.

“What happened to her?” he growled.
