Hannah tilted her head slightly, frowning at me. “What’s that?”

“I liked the idea of being able to hang out with friends after work and share an apartment with my best friend.” I looked over at Aiden. “That’s exactly what I’m doing, plus I get the kids I always wanted.”

“There’s no substitute for a night at home with the people you love most,” Hannah said. “And building a life with your best friend.”

Tucker looked at her, and the stare they exchanged made it clear they were deeply in love. Not as in love as Aiden and me, but maybe I was biased.

“When you find the one you’re going to spend the rest of your life with, you know,” Aiden said.

Not to be outdone by the couple across from us, we exchanged a stare. “And you don’t think it has anything to do with the muffins?” I asked him, then shifted my gaze to my sister and Tucker.

“No way.” Tucker shook his head. “Those are some delicious baked goods, but I had my eye on one woman from the first timeI saw her. You could have handed me a cup of broccoli, and I would have been just as in love.”

“Eww,” Jake said.

We all looked over at him. I assumed he was talking about his food, or maybe the mention of broccoli had brought that reaction from him. But no, he was referring to the conversation.

“Stop being gushy,” the four-year-old said when he noticed all of us looking at him.

We all laughed and returned to our food. Yes, maybe we needed to shift to some more kid-friendly conversation. But as Teagan got fussy and I had to help her and our four-year-old, Liam, I couldn’t stop thinking about the words we’d all just uttered.

Yes, it was true that I was married to my best friend, spending my life in the only place I’d ever want to live. The muffin had nothing to do with it. But maybe, just maybe, it let me loosen my inhibitions enough to truly make myself vulnerable to someone else.

And maybe that was what it took for me to finally fall in love.
