I park in the lot outside of the small flower shop. As I turn the car off and sit back in my seat, I wait for Sloane to find help.

“Cain. Z wants to take some girl out. He’s got questions,” Sloane says with all the finesse of a slice of cheese. “Zane, I’ve got you on speaker now so you can ask Cain what you want to know!” Sloan shouts, even though I can hear him clearly.

Taking a deep breath, I say, “I’m taking her to the Tavern on theHill. I’ve never been on a date. I want to make it special. I’m going to get her flowers, but I don’t know what kind to get.”

“Get peonies, sunflowers or daisies. They’re all pretty casual flowers,” he says in a bored tone.

“Should I get her candy too?” I ask, getting out of the car and heading toward the door.

“No. Just do flowers. I wouldn’t do both for a first date. Anything else you want to know?”

“Is it okay to kiss her on a first date? I want our first kisses to be special.” There’s a choking sound.

Sloane speaks up. “First kisses as in plural? As in, neither of you have ever kissed someone before?”

I huff, pushing my way into the flower shop. “No. I was waiting for her.”

The guy behind the counter looks up at me when I walk in. “Can I get a bouquet of peonies, daisies, and sunflowers?” He nods and starts grabbing things to gather on the counter in front of him.

“I said to get one of them,” Cain grumbles. “Whatever. On to the topic of kissing, it would be inappropriate for me to advise students on such matters.”

“Just ask her at the end of the date if you can kiss her when you walk her to the door. I saw that in a movie once.” Sloane answers the question for me.

“Okay, I can do that,” I reply with a new confidence I didn’t feel earlier.

Hopefully, by the end of the night, we’ll have crossed two things off her list. “What should I wear?”

Cain hums under his breath. “It’s a casual restaurant, so I would recommend jeans and a nice shirt.”

“Is there anything I’m forgetting or that I should do?”

“Not that I can think of. It’s just dinner. There’s no huge difference from when we all go out to dinner together. Just be yourself, and if she doesn’t like it, then that’s her loss, not yours,” Cain says.

“Well, maybe not completely yourself. You don’t want to take her on a murder spree,” Sloane cuts in.

He’s such a fucking asshole. “That happened one time! Once! You just won’t let it go. They deserved it anyway.”

“One time too many. The cleanup was hell,” he complains.

It happened two years ago, and he still complains about it whenever he gets the chance. I mean, sure, it’s kind of a bad thing to murder a bunch of people in one day, but honestly, it was only five. It’s not that big of a deal. He just needs to get over it. They were human traffickers anyway. They completely deserved it.

The guy on the other side of the store clears his throat and holds out the completed bouquet. “Should I get her a vase too? Is that a normal thing people just have?” I ask, ignoring the last few minutes of our conversation.

Cain sighs like I’m asking him to calculate the circumference of his own ego. “A college student in a dorm room? I doubt it. You should probably get her one.”

“Thanks, Caniac! You’re the best!”

“I hate that stupid nickname.”

I disconnect the call without saying anything else and smirk at the phone before walking over to the florist.

“All done. Do you need anything else?” He gives me a big smile.

I pull my wallet from my pocket. “A vase, please.”

Viviana

By the time there’s a knock on our door, I’ve just finished throwing on some lip-gloss. Sandy huffs out a breath, setting down the brush after one last swipe through my hair. “I can’t believe you just got ready for a date in twenty minutes.”
