“Of course. I can entertain myself. We can hang during Welcome Week if you want to?” I can’t help myself from looking over at her hopefully.

Sandy’s whole face lights up as she smiles at me. “I would love to!”

She hurries out of the room with a quick wave. I’m looking forward to getting to know Sandy. I have never had a friend, and now that I do, I’m excited to get to know her better.

Aknock at the door Wednesday morning makes my head snap up from my paperwork as Nox walks into the classroom. “You wanted to see me, Doc?” His smirk let me know he was only calling me that because he knows I hate it.

“It’s Doctor,” I grumble because my pride won’t let me ignore the dig without correcting it.

“I’m sorry,Doctor. What can I do for you?” He leans against the door frame with his ankles and arms crossed.

“I know you’re showing the Sociology students around on Sunday. Can you also do the same with the criminology students?” I put my pen down and fold my hands together on the desk.

Nox is silent as he lets his head fall back against the door frame. “Fine. I guess I can do that. You really need a teaching assistant. You can’t keep borrowing me, especially now that I’m a TA for professor Bowing.”

I narrow my eyes at him, but bite back the words I want to say. Even though he’s being a little abrasive, it is true. I usually rely on Nox to fill the role of my teaching assistant because I don’t trust anyone else. “Fine. I won’t ask for more help than this. I don’t want to put too much on your plate.”

Nox is silentfor a moment before he hoists himself away from the door frame to approach me. I sit back in my chair as he leans his hip against the side of my desk. He runs a hand through his brown hair as his matching brown eyes focus on me. Nox is almost my exact opposite from height to looks. Where I’m six foot five and thin, he’s five foot nine and stocky. His dark features are completely different from my pale ones.

He scratches his cheek. “Have you noticed how weird Z has been? He disappeared as soon as we got back home yesterday and he was out of the house first thing this morning wearing SU swag.”

My brows raise at that. I knew Zane took off as soon as we got back last night, but I had no idea about this morning. He must have left after I did. “Maybe he’s got a new project at the studio to work on?” I try to reason away the weird behavior.

Nox scoffs and scowls at me. “Do you not pay any attention? He said he was going to take a break before jumping into anything big for the first week of school.”

My lips purse. “He is also kind of impulsive. Sometimes he doesn’t need to plan out what he does.”

“That’s what I’m worried about.” Nox quirks a brow at me.

I groan, letting my head fall into my hands with my elbows braced on the desk. “I’ll text him and figure out what he’s up to.”

Nox claps his hand on my shoulder. “Thanks. I’ll see you at home later.”

I wave a hand at him, not even bothering to look up as he closes the door behind him. I pull out my phone and type out a message to our psycho.

Where are you?

It takes a few minutes for him to send a reply.

Zane

Watching freshmen play volleyball.

My whole face scrunches up as I process what he just said. He’s atWelcome Week? He’s a sophomore, and he complained the entire time last year when he was required to go.

Cain

Why?

Zane

I’m watching my girlfriend play with her roommate.

What the fuck? Zane has a girlfriend? He never told any of us about her. It must be a new relationship.I don’t even know if he’s ever had a girlfriend before. He hasn’t in all the time I’ve known him.
