Viviana smiles wide. “I want one of your field journals.”

Cain’s brows lower over his eyes. “Which one?”

She shrugs. “You can pick.”

“Deal.” Cain holds his hand out for her to shake.

Sloane comes in at that moment, quirking a brow at them. “What’s up?”

Z grits his teeth before answering the question. “They just agreed to race. If Cain wins, Viv doesn’t get to have an orgasm for a week. If she wins, he has to give her one of his notebooks.”

I notice he doesn’t tell Sloane about how Cain will be the one giving her an orgasm if he wins. Either way, Sloane winces. “Good luck out there.”

Sloane pats Cain on the shoulder as he passes by. I almost miss the secret smile he and Viv share.

“Come on! Let’s go hike!” Viviana announces, jumping down off the counter, looking up at Cain when he doesn’t move away.

He stays like that, looking down at her, before he pulls away and we head toward the door.

“Alright. This path here is a loop.” I point at one to the right, then to another at the left. “It lets out right here. Whoever makes it to the end first wins.”

Cain and Viviana nod, getting ready at the entrance. “On your mark, get set…go!” I shout, and they both take off down the path. We lose sight of them as they follow the curve.

Z, Sloane, and I stand near the exit, waiting to see when they round the curve again. “You guys know that she’s hustling him, right?” Sloane asks while Z is slowly losing his mind.

We both turn to him with wide eyes. “What? What do you mean?”

Sloane shakes his head. “She runs five miles every morning, and the cross-country coach has been begging her to join the team. She’s fucking fast. Cain has no chance.”

We look down the path just as Cain rounds the corner with Viviana close on his heel. Z starts chanting for her to beat him, but she stays behind him. With only a handful of yards left, Cain starts to smirk. That cocky self-confidence he carries at an all-time high. Only to deflate as Viviana darts past him and over the finish line.

She gives him her own cocky smile. “Did you really think I wouldn’t be able to win?”

Cain walks across the finish line with a scowl on his face. “One of these days, I’m going to spank your ass until you can’t sit down,” he huffs as he tries to catch his breath.

Viviana wanders over to the edge of the trail. “Ooo, pretty plants.”

Cain walks over as she goes to reach for whatever got her attention, just for Cain to slap her hand away. Viviana hisses, holding her hand to her chest and pouts up at him. “What was that for?”

“Don’t touch that… It’s poison ivy.” He gives his stern, disappointed professor frown to her as he still pants for breath.

Z storms over. “Did you just hit her?” he growls at him.

Cain shrugs. “She was about to touch it. If I yelled, she probably would have already been touching it. A slapped hand is better than two weeks of itching.”

Z shoves him. “I don’t give a fuck. You don’t hit her!”

Viviana stiffens, looking away and at first. I assume she doesn’t want to see them fight, but then she’s pulling a knife from between her breasts. A huge knife with knuckle dusters and a double-edged blade. How the hell did that fit down there? I’m beginning to wonder if bras are like Marry Poppins’ magic bag.

“Guys! Something’s wrong!” I snap at them.

They stop arguing instantly and go on the offense when they see Viviana. We’re all expecting it when two huge guys rush us. They’re both taller than me and just as broad. Zane instantly jumps into fighting with one of them and Sloane backs him up. As the smallest of the guys, the second one decides to target me. He pulls out a fucking butterfly knife. I easily deflect his swings, throwing a punch into his stomach. The guy fucking moans. Maybe Viviana was onto something when it comes to butterfly knives.

Cain comes over to help, and it doesn’t take him long to disarm him. I take him out quickly with an arm wrapped around his neck and jerking his head to the other side. The sickening snap echoes around me as the guy goes limp in my arms. “Fuck. That was so hot,” Viviana says, and I turn to see her staring at me.

A blush rises on my cheeks, and I look away quickly. Zane is still fighting the other guy. Not because the other guy’s a good fighter. I sigh, “Z, stop playing with him.”

A gurgled yell and a startledoomphreach my ears at the same time. I whip around to find a third guy on top of Viviana, pinning her arms to her sides with his knees. Her knife lies a foot away from her. Before I even have a chance to react, Z is there, a handful of the guy’s hair in his hand, yanking his head back and slitting his throat.
