“Yeah, you just keep her panties in your pocket,” Sloane huffs.

Nox and I turn accusing glares at Cain. “You what?!” I demand. “Why the hell do you have her panties?” Cain shrugs, slipping his hand into his front pocket and pulling out a pair of white panties that I recognize instantly. “That’s what she was wearing that day you made her wear that ridiculous schoolgirl outfit.”

Cain grins at me. “It was her punishment. I made her go the entire day without any on.”

Sloane chokes on his coffee, his eyes pinning Cain. “That was your fault? I thought she showed up to our tutoring session like that to seduce me!” He stands up, running his hand through his hair.

I’ve never seen Sloane so mad as he is now. Not even when I suggested he was using Viv. Cain goes down when Sloane tackles him to the ground like he’s been playing football his whole life instead of hockey. “Woah!” Nox yells, trying to pull Sloane off Cain, but only managing to keep him from punching Cain in the face.

Sloane hisses at Cain where he’s pinned beneath him. “She was a fucking virgin and because of you, I fucking hurt her. You stupid son of a bitch!” He finally manages to get his elbow free from Nox and punches Cain right in the solar plexus.

That’s a good move. I’ll have to remember that for the future. Cain coughs and splutters as he tries to catch his breath. “How is it my fault you were a brute?!” He glares up at Sloane like he’s a fucking idiot, and I mean, Cain is kind of right.

Nox manages to pull Sloane off Cain and they both get to their feet. Nox plants himself between them. “Look, I get that you’re mad, but Cain didn’t make you do that. It was all you.”

Cain pushes Nox out of the way, stepping into Sloane’s space. “Now what do you mean you hurt her?” His voice is low and hostile.

Sloane’s shoulders fall and he swipes his bottom lip with his thumb before he looks back up at Cain. “I didn’t know she was a virgin. I wasn’t gentle at all.” He rubs his palm over his face. “I thought she showed up without any panties on like that for me.”

The anguish and guilt on Sloane’s face is the only thing that saves his life. I hate that he hurt her, but I can understand that he didn’t realize he needed to be careful with her.

Nox frowns. “What do you mean she was a virgin? She told us all she wasn’t.”

Sloane rolls his lips in and looks away, refusing to answer. Cain steps toward him with his eyes narrowed with his truth-seeking mental abilities in full effect. It only takes a few moments for Sloane to break. “She thought I was asking how many people she’s killed.”

Nox’s mouth falls open and he just stares at him. Cain starts rubbing the backs of his fingers along his jaw. “What the fuckhave we gotten ourselves into? We can’t have her around. It’ll just draw attention to us and our work.”

My face falls and my entire body stiffens so much I’m pretty sure it’s vibrating. There’s so much tension in my muscles. “Then I quit,” I tell him without hesitation.

“Me too,” Sloane cuts in, taking a few steps over to stand at my side.

I’m surprised when Nox makes his way to stand next to us. Though it could just be because he likes to disagree with Cain. “We could always have her work with us.”

Cain scoffs. “She’s been here for four months and she’s already killed two people and castrated a football player. She’s brought the heat of the mafia after us, for fuck’s sake. We were attacked last month by a serial killer and his lackeys!”

I shrug. “I don’t care. If I die by Viv’s side, I’ll die happily. We don’t lead lives that end in death by old age.”

Sloane and Nox both nod in agreement with me. Cain just stares at them disbelievingly. “Seriously, you’re both on his side?” A dry chuckle tumbles out of his mouth. “Fine!” He sneers at us. “You want to get us all killed or thrown in prison for some girl, then fine. Don’t come crawling to me to apologize when this all goes to shit!” He storms out of the room and the front door slams behind him.

“Whelp, that could have gone better,” Sloane says, heading over to make himself a to-go cup of coffee.

Nox shrugs and leaves the room with his coffee already in hand. I watch him go, wondering exactly what he gets out of siding with us. Sloane stalks over to me and I glance up to see him watching the doorway too. “He likes her. I don’t think he wants to admit it to himself yet, but he likes her too,” he tells me in a matter-of-fact way.

His hand reaches up and ruffles my hair. All he does is chuckle when I swat his hand away. “If it wouldn’t upset Viv, I would stab you,” I snap, trying to smooth my hair back down.

He laughs again, and I want to stab him just for the principle of it. “Go give our girl her book,” he says over his shoulder as he walks out of the room.

I grit my teeth at his use of the word “our,” but then I frown. I’m not really mad about it even though I feel like I should be. I think back to the book in my backpack and wonder if maybe it’s possible that nobody gets hurt. Deciding against making my own coffee, I hurry out of the house to go meet up with Viv.

Once we’re seated at a small table at the cafe on campus, I push the book across the table to her. She looks down at it and then back up at me. “What’s this?” Her brows furrow as she turns the book over to read the back. She begins to read the description and her eyebrows slowly raise. “Is this a smutty book?” she asks, looking up at me with wide eyes.

I grin at her. “Yep. It is. I read a bunch of them to pick the best to give to you.”

She smiles brightly at me and slips the book into her backpack. “Thank you so much! This really means a lot to me.”

I give her a shy smile. “One of the guys in the book stalks her and he reminds me a little bit of us.”

Her brows furrow. “One of the guys? How many are there?” She takes a drink of her coffee.
