Viv

No, but they are gross.

Zane

Carol?

I have to use my hand to keep the laugh in this time.

Viv

No, but that is a stupid name. I meant crazy, and I’m pretty sure you know that.

Zane

I do.

Viv

Think we could stay up all night talking about all the horrible things that start with c?

Zane

We could, but we shouldn’t. You’ve got stuff to do tomorrow. You should get some sleep.

Viv

You should get some sleep.

Zane

I will. Go to bed and I’ll drive home and do the same.

Viv

Deal. Goodnight, Zane.

Zane

One of these days I’ll hear you say that in person. Goodnight, Viv.

I try to ignore the hot flush that runs down my spine, and I tuck myself into bed. I haven’t been sleeping well the last few nights, but I fall asleep easily now after talking to Zane.

Lennox

Here I am, on Sunday afternoon, leaning against the wall of the ballroom with a sign in front of me directing all sociology and criminology students to me. I wait until at least five minutes past the meeting time before I start talking. “I’m Lennox Finch. I’m a TA for Professor Bowing, but since Dr. Price doesn’t have a TA, he asked me to take his students as well, since both major classes are in the same hall. Follow me and I’ll give you a tour.” I turn and head to the exit, with my little ducklings following. I lead them through the courtyard and into the right building. “Huron Hall actually houses a lot of different departments, including the Department of American Indian studies. This is reflected in a lot of the building’s decorations,” I explain to the students like the professor asked me to.

We turn down the hall, and a shadow breaks from the wall to fall into step with me. A glance from the corner of my eye shows me that it’s Zane. “What are you doing? I’m busy right now,” I grumble at him under my breath.

Zane gives me his easy grin that shows too much of his teeth. “I’m not here for you.”

My brow lowers as I frown at him. “Who are you here for?”

Zane glances over his shoulder and I see a short brunette girl duck her head as soon as she makes eye contact with him. Z smiles over at me like that was the reaction he was expecting. “That’s the girl I’m going to marry,” he says with so much confidence.

“Does she know that?” I huff out a laugh, rubbing my palm over my mouth.

Zane shakes his head, but the grin never goes away. “I think I need to convince her we’re dating before I move on to marriage.”
