Zane’s brows go up. “Are you thinking about rushing?”

“Not a chance,” Viv says with her nose scrunched up.

Zane smiles. “Why not?”

Viv shudders. “The idea of that many people trying to befriend me gives me hives.”

Zane laughs loudly, before giving her a serious expression. “Will you marry me?”

“Holy fuck,” I mutter, hitting myself in the forehead with my palm.

Viv shakes her head. “I kind of just got out of an engagement. I don’t really want to jump into another one.”

Zane narrows his eyes at her. “You were engaged?”

Viv frowns. “I mean, I think so. Nobody asked me, but my dad was making wedding plans, so I guess so.” She blinks up at him.

Zane frowns back at her before his eyes light up. “We’ll just get eloped and then we won’t have to be engaged.”

Viv smiles up at him. “Maybe we should put it on hold until we actually know each other.”

Zane leans his forehead against hers. “I’ll tell you whatever you want to know.”

I’m just standing here watching this psycho obsession fest. I kind of want to drag Cain back out here because there’s no way he will believe this is happening. “Why an icepick?” she asks.

My brows wrinkle as I try to figure out what the hell they’re talking about. Zane lifts his head and his eyes brighten. “The splatter lines are so thin and elegant. I think it just tied the whole piece together,” he explains in an animated voice he always uses when talking about his art.

“What piece?” I find myself asking.

Viv looks over at me, surprised, like she forgot I was here. From the way she steps away from Zane, she probably did. I can understand that. Zane is an intense guy, but it still hurts my ego. I mean, I’m not the most attractive guy in the world, but it still hurts when I’mreminded. “His blood splatter painting in the museum,” she says with wide, innocent eyes focused on me.

I cough and glare at Zane. “His what now?”

Zane shrugs. “Nobody else noticed. Cain saw it and said it was fine.”

I grind my teeth before looking away. “I’m heading out. I’ll see you at home later,” I tell him before heading down the hall without waiting for a response. I need to get home to my computer and figure out more about this girl. Something is up. I just need to dig deep enough to figure it out.

Zane insists on walking with me to the Student Center. I let him, trying to ignore the fact that I now have a crush on Lennox Finch to go along with the ones I already have on Zane and Dr. Price.

I send Sandy a text to let her know I’ll be waiting for her outside so we can walk back together. I just made friends with her and now I’m sad at the thought of her living in a sorority house next semester. “So, Sandy wants to join a sorority?” Zane asks as he casually reaches over to thread his fingers through mine.

I frown a bit, realizing that I’m not uncomfortable at the contact at all. “Yeah, she wants to rush with Delta Phi. I guess they do a lot of environmental stuff.”

Zane nods. “Yeah, they’re okay. I don’t think any of the Greek life here is bad or anything. I’ve never heard about any issues, anyway.” That does actually give me some comfort. I was worried about Sandy being in a situation like I’ve seen on TV or in movies. “What will you do if she moves into the sorority house?”

I sigh and give a shrug that ends up being uneven from our clasped hands. “I don’t know. I guess I’d get a new roommate.”

Zane looks away with his jaw clenched and I’m worried he’s madat me, but I don’t know what I did wrong. We stop outside of the Student Center. His eyes land back on me and his jaw softens. “I don’t like seeing you upset. It’s stupid, but I feel like I’ve known you forever and I just want to keep you in a bubble.”
