Alexandra nodded. “I guess you’re right. I still don’t understand but I want to learn more.”

Her tenacity was beguiling. “Then I suggest we enjoy a late dinner together and you can ask all the questions you’d like. Is that suitable?”

“Only if I can get a ride home?”

“Deal.”

CHAPTER10

Alexandra

Stunned.

The word was the only one I could think of as Jameson followed the host to our table. He’d kept his massive hand against my back from the moment he’d parked his Porsche. Before I moved to Miami, I would have shied away from men who were insistent on opening doors and guiding me like I was a waif who needed help. I’d been the girl most likely to end up alone since I didn’t like men doing anything for me.

Not changing a tire.

Not repairing a broken pipe.

And certainly not ordering for me.

Since the minute I’d met him, it was as if I’d lost a part of myself, comfortable when he took control. I was dumbfounded by the realization, angry with myself for feeling that way, but Jameson had such confidence that I couldn’t resist allowing him to be the dominating force.

When he walked into a room people noticed, men and women alike. It wasn’t only because of his gargantuan stature but the way he carried himself.

What I’d seen had been unnerving, more so than I cared to admit at least to him. The closest I’d ever gotten to anything remotely like what I witnessed was by watching a movie. I’d thought about what Jameson had said in his office. While I hadn’t wanted to believe he was right about the women enjoying being treated like a puppy dog, I’d seen it in their eyes, joyous from feeling loved and protected. However, I still couldn’t grapple with why I hadn’t been able to take my eyes off them.

And for a few seconds, I’d wanted to be them, but only with Jameson.

I took a deep breath, my stomach rumbling. I hadn’t been able to eat all day, too nervous about the job and seeing him again. Now the wafting scents of charred meat and spices made my mouth water almost as much as being on the arm of such a gorgeous man.

He hadn’t asked me where I’d like to go and I hadn’t asked. Now, as he eased me into a chair on the open deck of a garishly lit six-story building, the table located next to an ornate railing overlooking South Beach, the ocean only yards away, I was reminded of just how rich he was. He fit in with the crowd in his luxurious attire while I remained in my jeans, tee shirt, and sneakers.

The breeze was light, music coming from all directions, flickering candles on every table. I shouldn’t feel as comfortable as I was, but he was as charming as he was dominating, the draw to him undeniable.

“What would you like to drink?” he asked as the waiter immediately approached the table.

“Red wine is fine.”

Without hesitation, he ordered a bottle I’d never heard of, conversing in Spanish. I turned my attention to people watching, enjoying the scent of the ocean as well. Then I sensed he was studying me as he’d done so many times before.

“What?” I finally asked.

“I’m waiting for your barrage of questions.”

“Truthfully, I don’t know what to ask that won’t sound ridiculous.”

He lifted his eyebrows. “No question is ridiculous. Why don’t we start with easy ones.”

“Who are you?”

“What do you want to know?”

I shrugged. “Why do others think you’re dangerous?”

“In a town like Miami, people feed off information to use against others. Given what I do for a living, I’m privileged to learn secrets and admissions that certain members would prefer to stay locked away.”

My smile was instantaneous. The man was becoming more intriguing by the minute. “Oh, my God. You blackmail people.”
