Something had changed since then.

“Ignore her,” Rena said, ruffling RJ’s hair.

I sighed. “Is she always like that?”

“She was fired and rehired, but she’s one of Vincenzo’s playthings, and her jealousy shows.”

“Jealousy? Why would she be jealous of me?”

“Angelina likes to gossip, and the word around the building is that you were hired without an interview,” Sonya explained.

My mouth dropped open in shock.

“Interviews are usually with the hiring manager, but somehow, your file got to Vincenzo’s desk, and he requested you come straight to his office,” Rena informed me.

I wrinkled my nose. “But—”

“Like I said, ignore her,” Sonya continued, grasping RJ’s hand. “Not every woman comes here to sleep her way to the top.”

“Sonya’s right. Angelina is a brat. If she gives you any problems, let Vincenzo know right away.”

“Doubt I’ll be here that long,” I replied as we headed for the elevator.

Rena pressed the button for the third floor. “Why do you doubt yourself?”

I sighed. “Vincenzo didn’t seem too excited to hire me.”

“He’s the youngest in the family. Sweet and charming, but a playboy, nevertheless—and deadly when he wants to be. He probably knew he’d fall for you and tried to push you away.” Rena gave me a sideways stare.

“Oh, I have a boyfriend.”

Rena held her badge to the elevators to close. “How long have you been together?”

“Almost three years, but we broke up briefly.”

Rena propped a hand on her hip. “How old are you?”

“Everybody keeps asking me my age.”

Rena smiled. “Because you look innocent, like a college student.”

RJ fussed in Sonya’s arms as we stepped off the elevator and headed back to the front desk.

“I’m twenty-two. College wasn’t for me.”

“I’ll let you get back to work. Great meeting you, Nyla.”

“You too, Rena.” I turned to watch Sonya and RJ heading in the opposite direction. “I’ll see you two later.”

I walked down the hall, looking for Angelina’s office. When I found it, the door was open, and Angelina was stacking a pile of files on the desk. My day would be long and exhausting if her attitude didn’t change.

“Angelina, I’m not sure what you’ve heard, but I have no plans to get into a relationship with anyone here. I have a rule not to date coworkers.”

Angelina locked a glare on me. “Good. I’m glad we understand each other because I would hate for your job to become difficult.”

I gave up and raised my hands. “Understood.”

“Great. Take these files and get started at that desk.” She motioned for me to sit across from her.
