“I thought I would be on the casino level?”

“You will be eventually. For now, Mr. Calabresi wants you here.”

Chapter 3

Vincenzo

Hiring Nyla was a bad idea. I was going to pay for it; I just wasn’t sure when or how. Her background check came back clean, but my instincts told me she was trouble. So, why had I hired her? My instincts usually screamed at me to avoid trouble.

It was Nyla’s second week at the casino. I hadn’t spoken to her—beyond saying good morning and goodbye. She learned fast, and Angelina had made it her mission to keep her busy.

Wiping the sweat off my face, I placed the weights back on the stand and gulped my water. I went to the gym at the casino or Calabresi Holdings every day before work. Today, it was the casino. Splitting my focus between both companies left me with little time for my family or socializing. My mother wanted me to settle down now that my brothers had found love, but it wasn’t my goal. At twenty-five, I was too young to spend the rest of my life with the same person. Women barely kept my attention for longer than a week. Angelina was the only girl I’d dipped into repeatedly. She could be possessive and jealous, but I’d never promised her exclusivity.

I grabbed my gym bag to answer my ringing phone, preparing to deal with my brother’s demands. “What?”

“Working off that sexual tension?” Renato had been fucking with me since he’d seen Nyla at the office.

My mouth twisted in annoyance. “Fuck you. Get off my phone.”

“Wait! We need to meet,” Renato stalled me.

A surge of air lifted my chest. “Why?”

“Governor wants to throw a party at the casino.”

My eyebrows pinched together. “No.”

“Not asking for permission.”

I sighed in agitation. All my brothers thought they could boss me around, but I made the decisions for the casino. It had been my idea to start something that could bring in legit money and clear our name in the media and around the city. I made the decisions, not Renato.

Sweat trickled down my back. “When?”

“In two weeks.”

“We’ve only been open for three months. Having the governor in our business won’t look good.”

Renato grunted. “Elio told her it was a one-time situation.”

“Elio should have come to me first.” I ended the call.

After swiping my badge, I exited the elevator and stalked to my office. Not paying attention, I bumped into a soft body. I dropped my phone and held her arms to stop her from falling.

“Sorry,” Nyla murmured.

“Pay attention to where you're walking,” I grumbled, bending to pick up my phone.

Nyla shook her head, ignoring my bad mood.

I slammed the office door and dropped my bag on the floor as my phone rang again. I ignored Renato’s call, slipping into the bathroom and turning on the shower to wash off the sweat from my workout.

I closed my eyes as water cascaded over my head, bracing myself for Angelina’s attitude. Rumors had spread that Nyla and I were sleeping together, which couldn’t be further from the truth. It didn’t help that I’d personally hired her, a job usually carried out by the employee manager. But when I’d seen Nyla’s application photo, she reminded me of someone, so I decided to conduct the interview and dig into her background. She’d come up clean, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss.

I growled as I heard the bathroom door open.

“You should have invited me to wash your back,” Angelina said as I stepped out of the shower and grabbed a towel to dry off.

I slapped her hand away as she ran it up my chest, turned off by her constant flirting. “Get out.”
