“Carter, you let her talk you into doing some crazy shit,” Cassandra huffed from the back seat.

“We're going shopping, I promise. Then we can have dinner at my place.”

“Does your husband know you're going to your ex-deceased, best friend’s house?” Cassandra smacked her lips.

“Ohhh…why so angry?”

“All right, wannabe housewife, this ain't a reality show.”

“I won’t be long. Vincenzo said he’s expecting to confront Gianney and his men about the attack.” I shoved the door open, knowing that Nancy, Cono, and Angelina were already dead. A feeling in my gut told me that Gianney could have the missing flash drive stashed in his place after the shooting at the office building. The blackmail that Mark and my so-called “uncle” tried to do was finally over, and I was no longer afraid to live my life fully. I crept up to the door, taking in the quiet scenery at his gated, one-story home, covered with “No Trespassing” signs.

“We are going with you,” Carter imposed, getting out of the car.

It was around lunchtime, and there weren't too many cars around. I was glad that it was a Thursday, and not the weekend, since he lived on a street with a lot of kids.

Carter scanned the area. “You know how to break into a house?”

“Yeah.”

Carter’s eyes grew wide.

“My ex-boyfriend unfortunately taught me a lot of things that I will take to my grave.” After picking the lock, I remembered that he didn't have an alarm, so luckily, it opened without a problem.

“What are you doing?” I asked Cassandra as she stalked up behind me.

“Praying that you change your mind. I’m not stupid enough to stay in a car if something goes down,” Cassandra responded.

“Gianney had a small safe that Mark told me about where he had his most important papers. If he worked with Gianney, then Angelina got a hold of a copy.”

The living room was painted in modest browns and tans, with a small fireplace, and a TV hanging on the wall.

“When’s the last time you were here?” Cassandra remarked.

“Probably a year or so ago.” While checking out the pictures on the wall, my head did a double take after seeing Mark and Gianney when they were younger. Both had to be no more than 17 or 18, and they looked ready to cause trouble.

“Here.” I strolled into the bedroom, pushing the closet door open, shoving the rack of clothes to the side, and on the floor a small steel safe sat.

“Let me grab it.” Carter mentioned, and I stood back.

“Do you think something is inside?” Cassandra challenged.

“Probably. Take it with us.”

Carter untucked his gun, holding the safe in the other walking in front of us for protection.

“What if we were Gianney’s people?” Vincenzo’s wide smirk on his face told me I was in trouble.

“How did you know I would be here?”

“My wife wants to protect me and all I want to do is protect her, so I figured coming here would be the spot.” Vincenzo approached, holding out his hand for me to take.

“Your arm.”

“Pretty lady, I’m fine.”

“Can we save the making up for after we leave here? This place creeps me out,” Cassandra whined.

“Cassandra, are you riding with me back to our place?”
