Nyla choked on her food, and I raised my hand to pat her back.

Placing her camera on the floor to eat, she repeated, “Underboss?”

“Remember when everything went down, and I was grilled about whether I wanted to go in fully?”

“A little.” She rubbed her temples.

“Today, I took the offer.”

“How dangerous is it going to be now?”

“Honest?”

“Honest.”

“Ten times as dangerous. I sit at the side of the Don. Sante took over for Savio.”

“So, you’re going to be gone a lot more?”

“Yes, and making decisions you won’t understand, but I have to do what keeps you safe.”

“Wow.” She stood up swiftly.

“Tell me what you’re thinking.” I jumped up, walked up to her back, and wrapped my arms around her waist as she stood in front of the mirror.

“I’m scared for you.”

“I know what I’m doing.”

“Seems like we just started to know each other as a couple, and now you’ll be gone more.”

“My goal is to always have you in mind whenever I need to do anything, and I promise to put you first.”

“I trust you.”

“Good, come take more pictures and finish this picnic.”

“You’re ready to just fuck.” Nyla cackled.

Grinning at her comment, I reached up and tweaked her nipple. “When it comes to you always.”

After picking up her camera, she took a picture of us together, then a few separate ones of me. We laughed and joked about how we met.

“That was fun,” Nyla expressed sitting with her back to my chest in the bathtub.

“Thank you for the picnic.”

“How do you feel about being underboss really?”

“I’m ready to see what it brings. My goal is to protect my brothers at all times.”

“Do your parents know?”

“Not yet.”

“I think you mother is going to have a problem with you moving in that direction.”

“She will at first—but understand that it would have happened in some other capacity; it’s our bloodline.”
