Elio shook his head in disappointment. “She should have stayed fired.”

I rubbed my forehead as a headache threatened. I still had to get the location of the cars to check them out.

“See what happens when you leave problems unresolved?” Renato demanded. “How about I handle Nyla for you?”

I flipped him off. “Killing her before I get my money back doesn’t work for me.”

Renato quirked an eyebrow. “You like her.”

I rolled my eyes. “Fuck off.”

Elio stared at me for a long time. “Either you like her, or you feel sorry for her.”

“Neither. I want my money.”

The driver dodged traffic and returned us to my condo in minutes. Renato and Elio got out and talked to the extra detail downstairs.

“Don’t go in there ready for war,” Elio advised.

I ignored him.

Nyla and Cassandra were sitting on the couch, holding hands.

“You. Out,” I said, pointing at Nyla’s best friend.

“Why does she have to leave?” Nyla demanded, jumping in front of Cassandra.

I ignored her. “Carter, ensure Cassandra gets home safely.”

Cassandra’s eyes widened as I said her name.

“Nyla, call me if you can,” Cassandra said, hugging Nyla.

Nyla whispered something in her ear, and Cassandra nodded.

Carter hovered by the door. “It’s fine, Carter.”

“Wait! I need him here,” Nyla said.

Jealousy hit me. “Why?” Did she think Carter would offer her protection from me? I had no reason to be jealous. Nyla meant nothing to me. Right?

“Nyla, you’re safe with Mr. Calabresi,” Carter reassured her.

She rubbed her arm, and I noticed a dark bruise. “What happened to your arm? How did you get this bruise?”

“Like you care!” Nyla moved away from me.

“Who. Hurt. You?” I enunciated each word.

“Nobody,” Nyla mumbled.

“Either you tell me, or Carter will.”

“One of your men,” Nyla huffed. “Wait! What are you doing?” She rushed to stop me as I moved toward the door.

“Who did it?” I opened the door and motioned between four guards.

Nyla lowered her eyes and crossed her arms to hide the bruise. “Why does it matter? You plan to kill me anyway.”
