“Carter, do you know who did this?” I demanded.

He nodded. “One of the new guys downstairs. I didn’t see it happen.”

“Take him to the cabin.” I turned back to Nyla. “As for you, get inside.”

I held the door open, and Nyla walked inside with me. I took out the first aid kit and sat her down. She also had a bruise on her shoulder and a small cut on her forehead.

“Why are you doing this, Vincenzo?” Nyla whispered.

The defeat in her voice sent a chill down my spine. My throat tightened, and I avoided her question. “The twenty-four hours are up. I can’t think of another plan unless we can get our hands on the trust fund documents. Do you know where he keeps his important papers?”

“Sometimes, he stored papers in a safe,” Nyla answered.

My fingers trailed down her cheek. “Can you access the safe?”

She shrugged. “Not sure.”

I tipped her head back to get a good look at the bruise. “You’re so young.”

Nyla frowned. “What does that mean? You’re only three years older than me.”

“And you haven’t matured, Nyla.”

“Oh, please. Don’t patronize me. You’re no better than me.” She snatched the bandage from my hands.

I looked up as Renato and Elio entered, wearing grim expressions.

I left Nyla to it and went to the kitchen, grabbed a glass of water, and gulped it down.

“We have dinner plans tonight, and you're required to bring your guests,” Elio informed me as he entered the kitchen.

“Huh?”

“Madre wants to meet Nyla.”

“No.”

“It’s not up to you. She found out from the girls.”

“What?” I was furious.

Angelina had never met my folks, and she worked for me. Now they wanted to meet the woman I was being forced to marry? The same woman who’d stolen from me?

“Cora and Rena were talking,” Elio confessed.

I concluded that Rena was interfering again. “Keep your fiancé out of my business.”

“Too late, little brother,” Elio chuckled, leaving the kitchen.

I returned to the lounge, where Nyla sat on the end of the couch with the remote. Renato glared at her coldly.

“Keep glaring. It won't change anything,” Nyla snapped.

Renato reached into his holster, removed his gun, and pointed it at her from across the room. “I should have killed you that night.”

“Yes, you should have.”

We were all shocked by Nyla’s response.
