“That sounds wonderful, and you can do your own thing without having to do a regular job,” Cora said.

“I know you have your own clinic.”

Cora replied. “My passion is helping animals. You should look into the new school year.”

“Maybe. First, I need to handle things with my uncle.”

“He’s still not answering your calls.”

“No, and Vincenzo refuses to allow me to go see him,” I sighed.

“I heard from Sante that Cono is trying to get you to sign over your board shares to him.” Rena stared at me.

“I won’t.”

“Cono’s playing a dangerous game.” Rena scratched the back of her ear.

I answered, “He’s manipulative, and after lying about the trust fund, I refuse to give in to him.”

Rena swung her head to me. “Have you seen the evidence?”

“What evidence?” Cassandra probed.

Since Cassandra only knew bits and pieces, letting her into all the drama might put her at risk since my uncle knew we were close, and he might try to use her against me as leverage.

“Uncle Cono planned for me to marry Vincenzo so that he could get a higher position in Calabresi Holdings—Vincenzo’s family’s company—as well as his other illegal businesses.”

“And he’s still alive?” Cassandra quipped.

“He has evidence on our husbands, and until they can find all the copies, they have to keep him alive,” Rena answered.

“Nyla, as a best friend, I’m going to always worry about you. So, are you sure you are safe?” Cassandra checked.

Reaching across the table, covered her palm. “Vincenzo has my back.”

“It was Mckayla and Adelina. They want to come on the trip.” Sonya placed her phone on the table.

Rena ducked her chin. “Might as well make it a family vacation,” she said, drinking her mimosa.

“Kids and all.”

“Renato might kill me for setting it up before talking with him,” Sonya laughed.

“At what point will he like me?”

“Take a while for him to grow on you,” Rena said.

“She’s right, just ignore him,” Sonya suggested, knowing how her husband could quickly change into a monster.

Sonya leaned over Rena’s shoulder scanning the vacation packages for Hawaii, while I answered my ringing phone, seeing an unknown number. “Hello?”

“Nyla?”

“Who is this?”

Loud yelling in the background crackled through the phone. “Gianney. I need to talk to you.”

After standing, I moved from the dining room swiftly.
