Intimidating. Unfeeling. Dangerous.
Those are all words used to describe me, and I never debate them.
As a centuries-old vampire and one of the leaders of the Sentinels, I’ve always been focused on my mission. On protecting my allies and friends from the enemies who seek to destroy us. There’s no room for emotions or relationships—those are weaknesses I can’t afford to expose.
I thought I had it all figured out.
But when I volunteer to seek out a woman who could help us, she’s nothing like what I expected. Intimidating, emotionless Gavril isn’t going to work this time.
She’s wounded. Vulnerable. And she makes me feel things I’ve tried to avoid for years.
Vampires are supposed to be powerful. Untouchable.
Then why do I feel so weak?
I can’t escape the memories of the terrible days I was held in captivity. Hidden away in my little cabin in the woods of Maine, I’ve tried everything to feel safe. Rituals and carefully arranged tokens and countless walks around my property… but nothing works.
When Gavril shows up unexpectedly, asking for help, it’s the last thing I need. Gruff, insensitive Gavril, who’ll do anything to get what he wants? Not interested. I have enough to deal with already.
But when he catches me in a moment of weakness, he’s surprisingly kind. Gentle. I start to realize he’s much more than what he lets people see.
Not only that, I feel safe with Gavril. All my jagged edges are less painful. And he makes me wonder if I really want to be alone, after all.
