Everyone in London knows that the Marquess of Applegate has high standards. He has few friends, always has some criticism of any social occasion and has never shown any interest in any young lady, since there was always some fault to be found! Joseph thinks his high standards to be perfectly acceptable, however, and fully intends to maintain them throughout the Christmas Season. Throwing the perfect Christmas ball is of great importance to him – only for it to be ruined by one young lady… a young lady he cannot seem to get out of his mind!
Lady Florence cannot help her clumsiness, often brought on by her nervousness in attending some occasion or other. Wishing that her mother understood her, she confides in her cousin but continues to make mistakes – including ruining the Marquess’ ball! A closeness between them begins to develop but Florence fears her mishaps will sever their connection.
