My Russian Roommate

I had just finished my last stop of the night when the call came in.

A fire had broken out in an apartment building just blocks from my place. The fire department is already on site, but it’s customary to have the police interview witnesses in case the fire was deliberate, so I reluctantly take the call.

A young girl sits on the curb outside the blaze with her head in her lap. It was her apartment where the blaze began. From this angle, she looks like a little girl, and I wonder if she’s even old enough to be on her own…until she lifts her head and nearly stops my heart.

Even covered in soot, I’m arrested by her sight. By everything about her.
