Hamish

Ilooked at my phone and cringed. Five missed calls from my mother and a text from Tommy asking where I was because she was now calling him.

I slid off my chair at the counter and went outside, intent on making this call in private.

I had heard Leo and Katerina two nights ago and my jealousy skyrocketed to epic proportions.

She had shared her bed with Alexsei and Riley in a weird rotation they had silently agreed on and I was done with the fun and games.

The more I was around her, the more I wanted to be with her. The more I realized that she was the exact kind of woman I had been looking for all these years.

My job may make it seem like I was a good catch and from an easy life, but my past and my connections to the MC club were anything but that.

When our father started the club, he had no idea what it was going to turn into and the more people who joined, the more it got a bad name.

I hadn’t dated much because I didn’t want to drag someone into that life, I didn’t want to have the same kind of relationship my parents had.

My mother might have loved my father in the beginning, but she resented him in the end.

I sighed as I sipped the coffee I made and looked over the light frost that covered the ground, the early morning sun barely above the horizon.

Autumn was well and truly here and I had a wistful moment of wishing I had brought the bike with me.

There was something special about riding in crisp morning air during autumn that you couldn’t get at any other time of the year.

I dialed my mother, waiting to hear her sharp voice when she picked up.

“Hamish. Where have you been? You have neglected your bride-to-be and completely embarrassed me with the Davenports. They said you refused to join their community. The same one my great-grandfather was a part of. Do you know what that means, Hamish?” She snapped and I grit my teeth.

I still don’t understand how she fell in love with my father when she was so obsessed with status and family connections.

“I know what it means, mother. But I have no intention of joining their little club. Surely you would know what happens when men join clubs.” I said, digging a little at her because I was pent up with so much frustration and angry at myself for not being able to just make things happen with Katerina.

“Your father started an illegal club. This is one for distinguished gentlemen.” She countered and I laughed bitterly.

“I looked over the paperwork they sent me. If you think those men are men of the law, then you didn’t learn anything while with our father. I have no interest in being associated with that.” I said with a sigh and she made a sound of annoyance.

“Fine. But at the very least, you must come back and discuss this wedding with your bride.” She lowered her voice into that soft fake voice she used to get her way with others.

I hated that voice.

“I have no intention of meeting with my bride, mother.” I snapped when I heard a sharp intake of breath.

I spun around to find Katerina staring at me, her face a mask of uninterest but I saw the emotions in her eyes before she turned away.

“Katerina…” I started but she slammed the door in my face.

“Fuck.” I said as my mother's voice shouted down the phone.

“Hamish! Are you with another woman? How dare you do this to Claudia!” She screeched and my temper snapped.

“No, mother. You listen and listen well. I was never going to go through with it. I am tired of being your puppet and playing these games in a world that I despise. I am done.” I snarled and she sucked in a breath.

“If you do this, I will tell Tommy.” She said with venom and in that moment, I truly hated her.

“Then tell him. I am no longer your toy to play with.” I snapped as I hung up the phone and went inside to find Katerina.

I found her in the kitchen, banging cups around as she searched for one she wanted.
