Before I could ask, Hamish cleared his throat and sat down, his face a mixture of anguish and anger.

“My father was one of the establishing members of Satan’s Serpents. In the beginning, it was meant to just be a club for motorcycle enthusiasts and a place where adults and kids who were from a rough background could seek solace. He did a lot of charity work and pooled all the funds into a universal account that was used to help any members when they needed it.” He smiled at that and I realized that his connection to his bike was more than superficial.

“As the club grew, so did the need for more controlling members. My father never wanted it to be run like a typical motorcycle club, the kind that attracts the attention of the lawbut as with everything, people attracted to that life will always find their way into an organization.” He stopped to take a sip of his coffee, most likely cold by now before he continued.

“By the time I was a teenager, my father and his partners had got themselves involved in some pretty nasty stuff and my father couldn’t find his way out. I made some bad decisions in my youth and rebelled against my father, turning instead to one of his business partners who I thought was far cooler than my father.” He smirked but I saw the pain in his eyes.

“I got myself involved in a gang turf war and in turn the club was also dragged into it, deeper than we had been. It was over fucking drugs and lines on a map. At this point, the club was beginning to break. Half the club members wanted to go deeper, seeing easy money, and the others wanted to cut ties and go straight. But I was in too deep at that point. I was taken as punishment by another rival gang, we had a rat in our group.” He stopped, glancing at Alexsei who nodded as if understanding what he was saying.

“My father came to make payment and that was when we discovered that the rat was one of his business partners who was creating his own crew. They called themselves Satan’s Hydra. He wanted to make sure my father stayed quiet and established himself. The payment was my life or his.” I watched as Hamish closed his eyes and took a deep breath, knowing where this was going my heart ached for him.

“My father gave his life for mine with the promise to look after Tommy and make sure I supported him in the vision of the club. Tommy wanted what our father did. A safe place for rough kids.” He smiled, but it was a hollow one.

“I was twenty-one. Tommy was nineteen. They had just killed the President of our club. I let my rage fuel me and we went after them, taking them out one by one until they were all dead. But the Hydra fanatics remained and continued on. Tommy neverknew that he offered his life for mine. But my mother did.” He said as his eyes met mine.

They were empty of all emotion as if his soul was gone. It was an eerie sensation, to be looked at like that.

“I went straight to keep my promise to my father. I became a lawyer to do what I could to keep Tommy and others in the club safe. But my mother, she never let me forget.” He laughed bitterly as he looked out the window.

“She came from money. I still don’t know how they met or fell in love but they did. She sacrificed her status when she found out she was pregnant with me. She has been trying to claw her way back into the society ever since. The supposed marriage, that is her doing, not mine.” He looked at me, his eyes pleading with me to understand.

“So why don’t you just refuse?” I asked slowly and he winced.

“Because she has held my father's death against me, threatening to tell my brother it was my fault. The woman she wants me to marry, her name is Claudia Davenport. Her father Albert is high up in the police force and the men who answer to him are constantly trying to put Tommy in jail. I am the only thing keeping him out, but they have him now. They have information that could put him away and the marriage was the bribe to keep him free.” He slumped in his chair, defeat weighing him down and I hated seeing him like that.

This wasn’t the cocky, sure-of-himself man I was used to and I wanted to destroy everyone who made him feel this way.

“What do you have to do with this?” I asked Alexsei and he slowly smiled, shrugging.

“I am just helping him with the Albert issue. I’ll find information to use against him and then we can get him to back off.” He said and I nodded.

“I’m sorry. I never wanted to lie to you, I just needed to figure out how to free myself of the mess.” Hamish said before hepushed away from the counter and walked down the hall to the room he had been using.

“The man doesn’t know how to ask for help without having something to offer in return. He feels for you, Pchelka. Like the rest of us. Go easy on him.” Alexsei said softly as I looked at him.

“He doesn’t want me to go easy on him. He wants me to push.” I said cryptically as Riley made his way into the kitchen.

“What’s all the commotion about?” He asked and I kissed his cheek.

“I am going to fix things with Hamish. Don’t worry if you hear shouting.” I said and he raised an eyebrow at me before looking at Alexsei who chuckled.

I left them in the kitchen, going in search of the man who had gotten under my skin in the most annoying of ways and now needed me to get under his.

Ididn’t bother knocking, instead, I barged into the room and slammed the door behind me.

Hamish looked up from where he was sitting on the edge of the bed, wariness and annoyance mingling in his stare.

“I wasn’t done talking,” I said sharply and he snorted.

“I was. I don’t feel like fighting anymore.” He said softly and that angered me.

Hamish loved to poke and prod and goad people and this defeated looking man was not the man who I was falling in love with.

“Stop it. Stop acting like you are the most hard done by person in this house. It wasn’t your fault Hamish, and you can’t continue to carry a chip on your shoulder about it. Stand up to your mother and own up to your brother.” I snapped as I walked toward him.
