“So you decided to kill your daughter,” I said with bitterness.

“It wasn’t an easy decision. But you are being given the option now. Leave behind this ridiculous charade and these men, join with Konstantin and myself and you will live.” She said as if it were the simplest thing ever.

“I don’t get it. You were happy. The memories I had of you with my father were happy ones. Your love of roses, the white picket fence house. A peaceful life away from the politics of the Bratva.” I mused as I stood, pacing to make sense of it all.

“It wasn’t easy living a lie but no one could suspect me. Your father was getting suspicious and overheard a conversation I had with my father in Moscow. He became a liability to our plan and I was compromised.” She sighed as if it were just an inconvenience of breaking a nail.

“So why didn’t you send me to Moscow too? Why let me believe you were dead?” I stared at the woman who had birthed me, my heart settling into an icy calm.

“Because I couldn’t risk anyone knowing. There were only a few people who knew I was still alive and got me out, back to Moscow where I could be kept in secret until the time was right.” She said and that got my attention.

“Time was right for what?” I asked warily.

“For the Novikov family to take control of the Bratva.” She said simply and I laughed.

She frowned, looking down her nose at me like I was some kind of bug.

“This was all about taking control?” I asked.

“Of course. It is always about power. But we had to tear the Volkova family down from the inside. Your cousin is the last remaining person alive, and we have him on the run.” She said with a grin, and I walked over to the bars, gripping them as I looked at her.

“You’re wrong. There are two. I’m still alive.” I said quietly and she smiled.

“For now. Think about it, Katerina. Live to fight another day and join me with Konstantin as your husband or die with the mongrels you have been fucking and the rest of your family.” She said and with those words, I realized that she didn’t consider me family at all.

I was a pawn to her, nothing more.

My entire life had been a lie.

She got up, walking away when two men rushed in, whispering to her and Konstantin.

“It would seem you have more friends than we realized.” She said as she looked at me.

“Make your choice now.” She said as she looked at one of the men.

“Get the helicopter ready.” She commanded and he nodded, rushing away.

“I would never side with you. You aren’t my mother. You’re a fucking monster.” I snarled and she shrugged.

“Suit yourself.” She said as she pulled out a gun, pointing at me.

Alexsei pushed me aside as the shot echoed through the room and grunted when it hit him.

“Alexsei!” I shouted when yelling above us echoed down into the concrete cell.

“We have to get you out of here Miss Novikov.” The man shouted as Konstantin disappeared through the door.

She glanced at me once, smiling before she followed. I turned to look at Alexsei who was swearing as he looked at his shoulder.

“Just a flesh wound.” He said as I rushed over to him.

“You fucking idiot! You could have got yourself killed.” I snarled as I smacked his other shoulder.

“I would gladly give your life for mine,Pchelka.” He said with a smile and gunfire echoed through the room, followed by more shouting.

A guard slumped to the ground as two men came rushing down and I watched as Dante Mendez grinned at Alfie.

“That’s four for me. I’m beating you now, Madden.” He said and I heard another man swear in Spanish.
