“Yeah. Ma’s fine. Well as good as she can be at the nursing home. I’m calling because I couldn’t help myself. After today, I needed to speak to you again and make sure you weren’t going to disappear on me.” He said, his words tumbling into the other as he didn’t take a breath.

“Riley… You make the best coffee in the world. I wouldn’t stop coming to see you.” I teased, then immediately regretted it when he sighed again.

“Look. I know it was a lot and I’m sorry for dumping that on you. I was just jealous seeing you with Leo and terrified that I would miss my shot with you. Is there any chance that you would be willing to at least go on a date with me?” He asked and I hesitated.

Anatoly’s words rang in my ear as Riley waited for my answer. A date wouldn’t hurt would it?

But what about Leo? I shook my head, it wasn’t like I was committing myself to him.

One date. I owed Riley at least that.

“Okay. One date.” I said and Riley let out a breath with a slight chuckle.

“Okay. Great. That’s perfect. Umm. What about this Friday?” He asked as I heard the sound of glass shattering somewhere in my house.

My alarm system went off silently, alerting me on my phone that someone had broken in.

Fuck.

I reached under my pillow for my gun and ran hurried over to my walk-in closet.

“Riley. I have to go. Someone just broke into my house.” I said before I hung up. I tossed my phone onto the bed and silently walked to the bedroom door, adrenaline rushing through me.

Who the fuck broke into my house? Who knew where I lived? It wasn’t exactly a secret, but I didn’t advertise it either. You had to search to find my home, the house was under my mother’s maiden name.

I checked the hallway; glad I still had the bad habit of leaving the kitchen light on to illuminate the house.

That was when I saw the man. He was in all black, a Balaklava over his face and searching through my drawers.

I silently made my way down the hallway, as he rifled through the junk drawer with old bills.

I pressed the gun to his head and he went still.

“Don’t move or I will blow your brains out over my marble countertop. Who are you?” I said before something solid hit the back of my head.

I gasped, my head spinning as I fell to the floor, the gun sliding across the tiles.

I spun around as another man loomed over me, his gun pointed at me. I kicked his knee as his shot echoed through the house, the bullet lodging into the roof as he swore under his breath.

I quickly scrambled for my gun, aiming at the man and pulling the trigger, satisfied when he screamed as I hit his shoulder.

I slid around the other side of the counter as the first man pulled off a shot.

“Get out. We have what we came for.” The man said and that angered me. What the fuck did they find?

I stood, aiming at them as they ran toward the rear sliding door and let off three shots before one of them turned, returning fire and forcing me to duck.

I felt the bite of a bullet before I got down as it hit my arm.

Fuck!

Rage flowed through me as I stood again, but they were gone. I ran to the broken door, swearing as glass pierced my bare feet.

“FUCK! MOTHER FUCKERS!” I yelled in frustration.

“KATERINA!” Someone shouted and I turned to see Riley standing in my hallway in a pair of sweatpants and sneakers but nothing else.

His eyes were wild as he looked around at the mess then on me, his eyes moving between the gun in my hand and then my face.
